“Narration of the Denting the Pride of Vainatēya”
(Vainatēya Garvāpaharaņa Kathanam)
श्रीपराशरः
श्लोकः
अन्यंविशेषं वक्ष्यामि शृन्वतां पापनाशनम्
मैत्रेय! मित्रभावेन सावधानमनाः शृणु।। 1
Śrī Paraāśara:
“Oh! Great sage Mytrēya! Out of friendship with you, I am narrating another special thing that removes all sins. Listen with attention. (1)
हनूमानव्म्जनासूनुः सच्चिदानन्दविग्रहः
गन्धमादनशैलान्तस्वर्णरम्भावनाश्रयः।। 2
Hanumān, son of Ańjanādēvi, One having the very form of truth, consciousness and bliss (satchidānandaroopa), the One having the golden banana groves of the Mount Gandhamādhana as his abode, (2)
अवाप्तसर्वकामो पि सर्वकाम्यफलप्रदः
स एव हृदि संवीक्ष्य लोकानुग्रहकाम्यया।। 3
The One that can fulfill all desires, though He Himself has all the desires fulfilled, wishing to be benevolent to the whole world, thought deeply – (3)
रामपादाम्बुजद्वन्द्वध्याननिर्धूतकल्मषः
अभून्निजपरीवारसंवृष्तो ध्यानतत्परः।। 4
Having become free from all sins, thanks to his devotion to the two lotus feet of Lord Rāma, remained intensely meditating along with His followers. (4)
अथान्तरे महासत्त्वो वैनतेयः खगेश्वरः
निजसत्त्वानुसन्धानात् गर्वितो गृष्ढविक्रमः।। 5
Pride of Garutmanta or Garuda
Meanwhile, the king of birds Garutmanta (the great eagle and vehicle of Lord Vişņu), possessor of great strength with which he is obsessed and felt strongly of courage, – (5)
को वा भवेन्नियुव्म्जानो युद्धकर्म ममाग्रतः
देवो वा दानवो वापि नरो वा पन्नगो पि वा
यक्षो वा संभृतप्राणस्समपौरुषविक्रमः।। 6
‘Can anyone from among the gods, demons, humans, serpent (Nāga) clan or demi-gods Yakşas stand fighting against me? Who has the virility and courage to save his life against me? (6)
यः कश्चिदपि नास्त्येव शोधिते जगतां त्रये।। 7
Even if one searches the three worlds, someone standing and fighting against me cannot be found. (7)
लब्धप्रतिष्ठाः कपयः शैलेयवहनादपि
सदृशस्ते कथं मे स्युः निस्सीमबलशालिनः।। 8
The monkeys are famous for their ability to carry mountains. However powerful they are, how can they be equal to me? (8)
अहं वहामि पक्षाभ्यां कुक्षिस्थाखिलविष्टपम्
कृष्ष्णं नारायणं साक्षात् अप्रकंप्यं सुरासुरैः।। 9
I am bearing with my own wings Krişņa, the very form of Lord Nārāyaņa (Vişņu), who has the entire Universe in His belly and, who cannot be moved by gods and demons.’ (9)
बलगर्वान्धकारेण मोहितष्च खगेश्वरः
आत्मानमविजानाति तुच्छीकृतजगत्त्रयः।। 10
Thus, eyes blinded by pride in his own strength, Garutmanta, not caring the three worlds, remained forgetful of his own body. (10)
कदाचिद्द्वारकापुर्यां श्रीकृष्ष्णो यदुनन्दनः
रत्नसिंहासनासीनः सहितः सत्यभामया।। 11
Once, Lord Śrīkŗşņa, the scion of the Yadu (Yāsava) clan, seated on the diamond-studded throne along with Satyabhāma (spouse) in the city of Dwāraka, (11)
सस्मार गरुडं गर्वपरीहारविधित्सया
स चागच्छन्महावेगात् अनुयातो महात्मना।। 12
Thought of removing the pride of Garutmanta. The moment Śrīkŗşņa thought so Garutmanta came there very fast. (12)
प्राव्म्जलिः प्रणतो भूत्वा तस्थावाज्ञामनुस्मरन्
ततः प्रोवाच भगवान् विनतातनयं हरिम्।। 13
Having come. He performed saluation and waited for the command of Kŗşņa. Then the almighty Śrŗkŗşņa said so to Garutmanta. (13)
वैनतेय! महावेग महाबल पराक्रम!
सुवर्णकदलीरम्ये गन्धमादनपर्वते
अनुध्यायति धर्मात्मा हनुमान् भक्तवत्सलः।। 14
‘Son of Vinatā (Garutmanta)! One very swift! One with great strength and courage! Hanumān, dear to his devotees and a righteous soul, lives meditating in the golden banana grove on the beautiful Mount Gandhamāshana. (14)
तेन सम्भाषणार्थं मे तमिहानय सुव्रत।।
आज्ञप्तो हरिणा ताक्ष्र्यो वेगेन जितमानसः
जगाम तत्क्षणादेव गन्धमादनपर्वतम्।। 15
Oh! Suvrata (devoted to correctness)! I have to talk to him. Hence, bring him here in a moment.’ (15)
तत्रापश्यत्कपिश्रेष्ठं निश्चलस्वांतसभ्रमम्।। 16
Garutmanta’s Experience
There he (Garutmanta) saw Hanumān, the great monkey, performing meditation with a settled mind. (16)
हनूमतः पुरः स्थित्वा सो वष्टभ्य पदे खगः
उच्चैराकारयामास स्थिरयोगमिमं मुहुः।। 17
Standing with pride before Hanumān, Garutda (Garutmanta) called Hanumān meditating, meditating in a steady posture, several times very loudly. (17)
आहूतेा सि कपिश्रेष्ठ श्रीकृष्ष्णेन महात्मना
योगं विघटय प्राज्ञ मा कुरुष्व विलंबनम्
त्वां विना नोत्सहे गन्तुं दुर्लघ्यं कृष्ष्णशासनं।। 18
‘Oh! Great monkey! ŚrīKŗşņa. The great soul, is calling you. Stop doing your yoga. Oh! Great wise One! Do not delay. I will not go away from here, unless I take you, because one should not ignore the command of ŚrīKŗşņa.(18)
नापश्यद्विषयं कव्म्चित् बाह्यं कपिकुलाग्रणीः
रामचन्द्रपदद्वन्द्वध्याननिश्चलमानसः।। 19
He did not notice that Hanumān, at that time, is meditating on the lotus feet of ŚrīRāma with a firm mind and, hence, is ignorant of the world around. (19)
तदा सुपर्णः कृष्ष्णाज्ञां संस्मरन्नीतिकातरः
निचिक्षेप निजत्रोटिं तन्नासाविवरान्तरे।। 20
Then, frightened by the thought of the command of ŚrīKŗşņa, Garutmanta put (mischeviously) his long beak into the nostril of Hanumān. (20)
ज्ञात्वापि वैकृष्तं तस्य सर्वभूतान्तरस्थितः
तूष्णीमास्ते सकृष्द्वारमजानन्निव मारुतिः।। 21
Noting the indecent act of Garutmanta, Hanumān, the one that dwells in the hearts of all the living creatures, ignored that foul smelling nasal cavity. (21)
पुनराकारयाव्म्चक्रे कर्णान्ते न्यस्तचुव्म्चुकः।। 22
Then, seeing the unmoved Hanumān, he put his beak near His ear and called again. (22)
अथ योगंकपिश्रेष्ठः उपसंहर्तुमुद्यतः
प्रणायामं यथोक्तं वै कर्षन् समुपचक्रमे।। 23
Then afterwards, deciding to withdraw his yoga posture Hanumān, proceeded to perform the controlled breathing (prāņāyāma) as per the stipulated procedure. (23)
दक्षिणेन विरेच्यादौ नासारन्ध्रेण योगवित्
वामेनापूरयद्वायुं निरोद्धुं नासिकान्तरे।। 24
An expert in yoga, Hanumān exaled (rēcaka) through the right nostril and inhaled (pooraka) through the left nostril, in preparation to hold the breath in the nostril (kumbhaka). (24)
तदा सङ्कटमापेदे भूतपूर्वं शकुन्तराट्
तद्विरेचनवेलायां दूरान्निष्कास्यते मुना।। 25
This act put king of birds Garutmanta that is nearby to great discomfort. Each time Hanumān was exhaling during prāņāyām, Garuymanta was being thrown back a long way. (25)
पुनरापूर्य वेलायां नियते नासिकान्तरे
कुम्भकेन यथावायुं निरोधयति मारुतिः
तथा निरोध नासान्तं सस्मार पितरौ स्वकौ।। 26
Each time Hanumān was inhaling during prāņāyām, Garuymanta was coming close to the nostril. As Hanumān was holding the breath (pooraka) Garutmanta is getting stuck motionless to the nostril of Hanumān. Garutmanta started recalling his ancestors with the pain (caused in that way). (26)
पीडासद्रवेदेवं प्राणात्ययविधायिनी
प्राणायामैश्च निर्मुक्तः कपिना पन्नगाशनः।। 27
The pain was life threatening. As Hanumān stopped doing prāņāyām, Garutmanta got released. (27)
आत्मपीडानिदानाच्च कृष्ष्णाज्ञालङ्घनादपि
चुक्रोध विनतापुत्रः कालाग्निसमदीप्तिमान्
उत्पपाताथ वेगेन पक्षाभ्यां खं लिखन् मुहुः।। 28
As a result of that pain and his inability to perform Kŗşņa’s command he got very angry; and radiant like the fires of the End of the World time (pralayakālāgni), swiftly rose into the sky by powerful swings of his wings. (28)
कपिं ग्रहीतुकामेन प्रवृष्द्धतनुमण्डलः
मेघसश्लिष्टपृष्ष्ठार्थः वीक्षमाणः कपिं भुवम्।। 29
Hanumān-Garutmanta Tussle
With the intent of grabbing Hanumān and taking Him away, he grew his body size so much that his back was touching the clouds and looking down at Hanumān (29)
तद्ग्रहान्तरलाभाय चकार गतिमण्डलीम्
तथाविधोद्यमं ताक्ष्र्यं विनिश्चित्याव्म्जनीसुतः।। 30
Wishing to take Him away forcibly, he was flying in great circles. Realising that Garutmanta’s attempt, Hanumān (30)
वालमभ्रंकषं सद्यः वर्धयामास तद्ग्रहे
तं तु दृष्ष्ट्वा गरुत्मान् वै मेधिस्तम्भमिवायतम्
भ्रमश्रमापनोदाय विश्रान्तस्तत्र वालधौ।। 31
Extended his tail towards the clouds so as to catch Garutmanta. Thinking that to be a part of a tree wood, he sat on it to get rid of the fatigue that he faced. (31)
विरुद्धसर्यू सव्म्चारंसंछन्नहनुमदगिरिम्
आत्मविश्रांतिदं छेत्तुंतमैच्छद्वयसांपतिः।। 32
Garutmanta was thinking of injuring that sun-obstructing and mountain-covering huge tail of Hanumān, on which he himself is resting. (32)
विवेध वालधिं तस्य तुण्डाग्रेण गरीयसा
हनुनी इव देवेन्द्रो वज्रेण शतकोटिना।। 33
Then he started pecking at the tail with his huge nose powerfully, like Indra once hit the jaw (of Hanumān). (33)
पक्षितुण्डाग्रभिद्दण्डः विपक्षबलमर्दनः
चुकोप हनुमान् ताक्ष्र्ये त्रिपुरेष्विव शङ्करः।। 34
Pecked on the tail repeatedly by Garuda, enemy-destroying Hanumān became very angry on him like Śankara was angry with demon Tripurāsura. (34)
ततोवालाग्रलग्नाङ्गं बबन्धाण्डमिवाण्डजम्
प्रचेतःपाशसङ्काशौ मारुतिस्तस्य लोमभिः।। 35
Then Hanumān, caught Garutmanta sitting on the tip of his tail enveloped in the hairs of His tail, that are like the grabbing strands (pāśa) of the Lord of Waters, Varuņa. (35)
दृष्ढबन्धनिरुच्छ्वासं यंत्रोपलसमद्युतिम्
द्विगुणीकृष्तवातेन क्षिप्तवानिव यन्त्रतः।। 36
Garutmanta, asphixated by the tight hold and feeling as though he is between two grinding stones, was thrown away with double the force. (36)
वालभग्नस्वसर्वाङ्गः कालान्तकवशंगतः
वालक्षेपादनिर्वार्यश्वेतद्वीपे पपात सः।। 37
With broken body parts because of beating by the tail, hardly alive (grasped by the Yama, the God of Death) and thrown away by the same tail, Garutmanta could not stop himself and fell on the Śwētadweepa = White Island). (37)
सभग्नपक्षमूलाग्रः भग्नगुह्याङगसंहतिः
भग्नतुण्डाग्रदण्डांतः मग्नः क्षीरार्णवे वयः।। 38
Garutmanta returns to Kŗşńa
With broken roots of wings, injured inner organs and broken beak, that great bird fell and drowned in the Ocean of Milk (abode of Vişņu). (38)
अथक्षीरोदसंस्पर्शात् पुनरुद्बुद्धपक्षतिः
विश्रम्यनाम तत्तीरे जगाम द्वारकां पुरीम्।। 39
By the touch of the liquid of the Ocean of Milk, his wings regenerated; he took rest for a while on its beach and left for Dwāraka. (39)
निर्विण्णवदनस्ताक्ष्र्यः विसृष्ष्टबलदर्पकः
लज्जाभरसमायुक्तः श्रीकृष्ष्णं सन्ददर्ष ह।। 40
His face in a helpless frown and his pride over his strength neutralised, Garutmanta presented himself before ŚtīKŗşņa. (40)
लज्जावनतचूडाग्रं पुरतस्संस्थितं हरिः
तमुवाच वचस्स्वादु निगूढविशदस्मितः।। 41
Seeing shamed Garutmanta standing with a hanging face before Him, smiling, Kŗşna said so sweetly. (41)
कथं तिष्ठेः खगश्रेष्ठ! नि£वण्ण इव दृश्यसे
नानीतो पि कपिश्रेष्ठः विलम्बः केन हेतुना।। 42
‘Oh! Lord of the birds! Why are you standing like that? What is the reason for your gloominess? Also, you have not brought Hanumān! Why did it take such a long time? (42)
न दृष्ष्टो प्यथवा स्वेन सव्म्चरन् कपिभावतः
तन्ममाचक्ष्व वष्त्तातं पष्च्छतस्तत्त्वतः खग।। 43
Have you failed to see Him because he was roaming around in the form of a monkey? Oh! Garutmanta! Tell me all that I have asked.’ (43)
ततः प्राह हरिं ताक्ष्र्यो ह्रिया वनतकन्धरः।। 44
Then, with his head bent in shame, Garutmanta said so to ŚrīKŗşņa. (44)
देवदेव! जगन्नाथ! पुराणपुरुषोत्तम!
त्वन्मायया जगत्सर्वं मोहितं सचराचरम्।। 45
‘Oh! Lord of Lords (DēvaDēva)! Lord of the Universe (Jagannāthā)! Greatest among the personalities of the Puranatimes! The whole Universe remains mesmerised by your power of illusion.’ (45)
इतो गत्वा हमत्यर्थं सदर्पबलपौरुषः
गन्धमादनमद्राक्षं गिरिं सौरभबृहितम्
तत्रापश्यं हनूमन्तं निश्चलं योगनिष्ठया।। 46
‘Having gone with great pride in my strength, I saw Mount Gandhamādana emanating pleasant fragrances. There I saw Hanumān in practicing a still yoga posture. (46)
ततस्समीपमगमं व्यवधिव्यर्थसंभ्रमः
अश्रावयमथा हं तु भवदाज्ञां गरीयसीम्।। 47
Then, anxious that the time is nearing, I let him hear of your worthy command. (47)
तथा पि नाश्रुणोदेष तामनन्यकथारतिः।। 48
Even then, he did not listen to me, not interested in thinking about other things (at that time).’ (48)
गारुडं वचनं श्रुत्वा मुखारोपितविस्मयः
उवाच विस्वरं वाक्यं हरिर्भक्तपरायणः।। 49
Hearing Garutmanta’s words, a look of surprise clear on his face, ŚīKŗşņa, kind to His devotees, said so with an unmelodious voice. (49)
किमिदं क्रियते जाप्यं धिक्पाषण्डसमेक्षणम्
समाह्नय हनूमन्तं अस्ति तेन प्रयोजनम्।। 50
‘No, no! What is this delay! It is like a recitation without rules. Bring Hanumān right away. I have work with him.’ (50)
इति कृष्ष्णेन सन्दिष्टः भीतः कपिमनुस्मरन्
वचनं करुणं प्राह गरुत्मान्नम्रकन्धरः।। 51
So directed by Kŗşņa, frightened and thinking of Hanumān, Garutmanta said so pitiably with a bent head. (51)
अस्वभावि मया यच्च चापलं कर्म कुर्वता
दुर्वचो भगवन् देव नोक्तं हि जन्मजन्मनि।। 52
‘Oh! Almighty! Lord of lords! Having done an unbecoming silly act, I should not tell lies in any future life cycle. (52)
सर्वज्ञेन त्वया देव! मदगर्वहरणाय च
मृष्त्युरेष कृतो नूनं कपिरूपधरो मम।। 53
Oh! Lord! You yourself created my death in the form of a monkey, so as to neutralise my pride. (53)
यस्यामास्ते दिशि प्राज्ञ उदासीनो पि मारुतिः
तस्यै नमस्त्रिसंध्यं वै कुर्यामुक्तेतरक्रियाः।। 54
My bows in the direction of the learned Hanumān every morning, noon and evening (trisandhya), even when he is apathetic (not doing anything). Except this, command me to do anything else. (54)
अथ चाज्ञापय स्वामिन् कर्तव्यमपरं मम
अयथाबलमारम्भः विनाशः क्षयसम्पदः।। 55
Oh! Lord! I will obay any other work commanded by you except that. Starting something beyond one’s capacity is surely disastrous, as well as reduces one’s esteem.’ (55)
इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य प्रहसन्यदुनन्दनः
जगाद वचनं न्याय्यं मर्मोद्घाटनतत्परम्।। 56
Krishna’s Advice
Hearing these words said by Garutmanta, ŚŗīKŗşņa, smiling said these correct words, whose essence is understandable. (56)
ब्रवीषि किमिदं शूर! पुरैवं नाभिभाषसे
न युक्तं तव पक्षीश! प्रकष्तस्यैव वैकृष्तम्।। 57
‘Oh! Courageous one! Why are you saying so? You never talked like this in the past. Oh! Best among birds! These words that are against nature are not for you. (57)
विक्रमस्य तव क्वापि प्रतिघातो न विद्यते
स तु शाखामृगि हन्त को पि वन्यफलाशनः।। 58
There will never be a hurdle to your valor. Alas! After all, he is only a monkey that eats fruits available in the forest and moves among tree branches. (58)
अपहाय परीहासं गम्यतामेष नीयताम्
अस्ति प्रयोजनं तेन विलम्बं माकृथा वृथा।। 59
Leave the funny part. Go immediately and bring him. I have work with Him. Don’t delay unnecessarily. (59)
गत्वेदानीं हनूमन्तं रामनामानुवर्णया
कपे! भवन्तमाहूते सीतारामो महानिति।। 60
Go reciting the name of Rāma or Hanumān and tell, ‘Great monkey! You are being called by Seetārāma.’ (60)
एवं वदति गोविन्दे स प्रत्याख्यानकातरः
तथेति प्रतिजग्राह प्राणेष्वास्थां विहाय वै।। 61
When Krişņa said so, afraid to answer Him back, saying yes and having lost hopes of living – (61)
जगाम तत्र वेगेन गन्धमादनपर्वतम्
यथापूर्वं ददशैंष तत्र शाखामृगोत्तमम्।। 62
Went fast to Mount Gandhamādana. Garutmantasaw Hanumānthere just as he did the last time. (62)
प्राव्म्जलिः प्रणतो भूत्वा मन्दाक्षरमुवाच सः
कपे! भवन्तमाहूते सीतारामो महानिति।। 63
Slowly approaching Hanumān with palms put together in reverence’ reciting the name of Rāma, said, ‘Oh! Great monkey! Seetārāma, the greatest of the great is calling you.’ (63)
उद्बुद्धनयनस्सद्यः हस्ताकृष्ट् इव त्वरन्
असमाप्यापि योगान्तमुवाच कपिशेखरः।। 64
Opening eyes immediately and jerking himself into action Hanumān, said so. (64)
धन्यो स्मि कृष्तकृष्त्यो स्मि महाभाग्यो स्मि यत्वया
सुखं मे प्रापितं श्रोत्रे रामनामकथामृष्तात्।। 65
‘I became auspicious. I became successful. I am blessed with great merit because of you. My ears are happy hearing the recitation the elixir (amŗta) of Rāma’s name. (65)
इदमघ्र्यमिदं पाद्यं अयं पुष्पाव्म्जलिस्तव
फलानीमानि गृष्ह्णीष्व मधुराणि खगेश्वर! 66
Oh! Lord of the birds! Here, I am providing you water for washing hands (arghyam). Here is water for washing feet (pādyam). I am bowing to you with flowers (puşpāńjali). Please accept these sweet fruits. (All acts of worship). (66)
यथा मे राघवः पूज्यः जाग्रत्स्वप्नसुषुप्तिषु
तथा चापि समच्र्यस्त्वं रामनामपरायणः। 67
Just like Rāma is worthy of worship to me in the three states (awake = jāgŗti, deeply asleep = suşupti and dreaming = swapna), so one reciting the name of Rāmais worthy of worship. (67)
सन्दर्शय सखे! राम गच्छ यत्रास्ति राघवः
आरोह त्वंममस्कन्धमथवा हमनुव्रजः।। 68
Oh! Friend! Show me Rāma. Let us go to where Rāghva is there. Ride my shoulders. Or I will follow you.’ (68)
एवं वदति संप्रीत्या वायुपुत्रे महात्मनि
तत्स्कन्धारोहणाद्वीतः प्रयातः पुरतः खगः।। 69
On a very happy Hanumān, the great soul, saying so, afraid of riding His shoulders, Garutmanta walked in front. (69)
गन्तव्यवत्र्मप्रणयात्कपीन्द्रो
ह्यरत्निमात्रंतमनु प्रयातः
न चेत्पुरस्तात् प्रतियानकाले
मुहूर्तगम्यां सरणिं क्षणाद्गतः।। 70
Because the path to be traversed is very dear to Him, Hanumān followed Garutmanta closely. Since the path is clear they reached there in a trice. (70)
आयांतमारादुदयाद्रिशोभं
कृष्ताव्म्जलिं राममनुस्मरन्तं
पुरस्सरं स्वर्णपतत्रिबिंबं
निरीक्ष्य कृष्ष्णो रघुरामतां ययौ। 71
Seeing Hanumān approaching, radiant like the rising son, reciting the name of Rāma with palms touching in reverence (ańjali), with golden hued Garutmantain front, Kŗişņa changed his form to that of Rāma. (71)
सत्यभामां ततो वीक्ष्य वचनं चेदमब्रवीत्
रामो हमभवं देवि! त्वं सीतात्वं वह द्रुतम्।। 72
Then seeing his spouse Satyabhāma, he said, ‘Oh! Lady! I changed myself as Rāma. You become Sītā immediately.’ (72)
श्रीकृष्ष्णवचनं श्रुत्वा चेत्थं सत्या करोन्नहि
नागमज्जानकीरूपं दृष्ष्ट्वा कृष्ष्णो वदद्वचः।। 73
Satyabhāma tried to show as though she did not hear ŚrīKŗşņa’s words. Hence she did not acquire Sītā’s form. Then Kŗşņa said so. (73)
त्वरितं कुरु सीतानुवेषमेष कपीश्वरः
नो चेद्ववेद्गर्वभङ्गः अस्माकमपि मानिनि।। 74
Heh! Hanumān is coming. Acquire the form of Śītā. Oh! Impulsive lady! Otherwise we too will get our pride dented.’ (74)
सत्यभामा विचिन्त्यात्मन्यद्य कर्तुमिदं कथम् ?
श्रीकृष्ष्णो मां परीक्षार्थमित्थं संकल्प्य बाधते।। 75
Satyabhāma thought, ‘How to acquire Sītā’s form now? ŞrīKŗşņa must be pestering me, just with the intent to test me. (75)
रुक्मिणी कथमप्येतत्कर्तुं नार्हति सर्वथा
इति निश्चित्य कृष्ष्णाय सद्यो वचनमब्रबीत्।। 76
Rukmiņī (Kŗşņa’s senior wife) is also not capable of acquiring the form of Jānakī. So deciding, she said so to Kŗşņa. (76)
रुक्मिण्यां तव चेत् प्रीतिस्तया कारयितुं वरम्
न युक्ता हमिदं कर्तुमिदानीं यदुनन्दन! 77
‘Oh! Harī! It is better to get this done by Rukmiņī, if you adore her. I can’t do this thing now.’ (77)
इत्याकण्र्यावदत्कृष्णः सत्यया द्रुतमानसः
एष आगच्छति कपिः तव चेन्नास्ति धीरता
रुक्मिणीमपि वा सद्यः कर्तुमाज्ञापयाम्यहम्।। 78
Hearing these words of Satyabhāma, with an anxious mind, he said to her, ‘Heh! Hanumān is coming. If you do not have the firmness to take the form of Jānakī, I will ask Rukmiņī to do so.’ (78)
इत्युक्तवंतं श्रीकृष्ष्णं लज्जावनतशीर्षिका
सत्यभामा वदन्नूनं रुक्मिण्यपि चरेत्कथं?
मया कृतां क्रियां कर्तुं नैतस्याप्यस्ति योग्यता।। 79
To these words of ŚrīKŗşņa, with her head bent in shame, Satyabhāma said so. ‘How even Rukmiņi can do so? She is not competent to perform the task that I cannot.’ (79)
श्रीकृष्ष्णः रुक्मिणीं वीक्ष्य कर्तुमाज्ञां प्रयच्छति
नो चेद्ववेद्गर्वभङ्गः अस्माकमपि मानिनि! 80
Then ŚrīKŗşņa commanded Rukmiņ ito do so and said, ‘If we do not do so, Oh! Good lady! We will have our pride dented.’ (80)
रुक्मिण्यभूद्रुक्ममनोज्ञभूषणा
विदेहपुत्री सहधर्मचारिणी
पुरी पुरद्वारवती तदानीं
ह्यासीदयोध्या रघुराज्यधानी।। 81
Then adorned with beautiful ornaments Rukmiņi turned into His (Rāmaform) wedded wife, great lady Jānaki. The city of Dwāraka turned into the city Ayodhya (Rāma’s city). (81)
तत्र सिंहासनासीनं सीतया सह राघवम्
ननाम हनुमान् भक्त्या प्रदक्षिणपुरस्सरम्।। 82
Hanuman meets His Lord
Seeing Rāma seated on the throne, along with Sītā, happy Hanumān circumambulated them, bowing in reverence. (82)
उत्थाय प्राव्म्जलिर्भूत्वा परमानन्दनिर्भरः
तुष्टाव स्तोत्रभावैष्च वेदांतैरूध्र्वबृंहितैः।। 83
Then, blissful Hanumānvery standing before them with a bent hea His palms joined in reverence and sang Vēda based hymns of praise. (83)
जगौ रामकथां श्राव्यामानन्दाश्रुकलः कपिः
ननर्त नृत्यशास्त्रज्ञः सर्वान् विस्मापयन् सभाम्।। 84
With his eyes full of tears of joy, Hanumān sang the story of Rāma melodiously. An expert in the science of dancing (nāţyaśāstra), He danced so nicely that the members of the assembly felt lost in happiness. (84)
ततः कुशलमापृष्ष्टो रघुनाथेन धीमता
सर्वत्र कुशलं प्राह विनया वनतः कपिः।। 85
Afterwards, as the great Śreerāmacandra asked about His (Hanumān’s) well-being, bent in reverence, Hanumān said that all is well with Him. (85)
त्वयि त्रातरि भक्तानां नाशुभं विद्यते क्वचित्
अधिरोहति पूर्वाद्रिं भास्करे तिमिरं कुतः।। 86
‘When You, the protector of devotees Yourself is protecting me, there will never be an inauspiciousness. How can there be darkness when the Sun is above the eastern hill?’ (86)
इत्यावेदितभक्तिंतमब्रवीद्रघुनन्दनः।। 87
To Hanumān, expressing devotion in this manner, Rāma said so. (87)
उपपन्नमिदं सर्वं त्वयि भक्तशिरोमणौ
त्वत्प्रमाणा वयं सर्वे नूनं दृष्ष्टं ततस्ततः।। 88
‘Oh! Hanumān! In you, best amongst the devotees, stays well the entire features of Yōga. We all are existing by virtue of your generosity. We will be known through you. (88)
एकप्राणश्शरीरे स्मिन् सीतायां द्विस्त्रयो नुजे
चत्वारस्तु इमे प्राणाः तस्मात्सर्वप्रियो भवान्।। 89
There is life in this body. My second life is in Sītā, the third life in Lakşmaņa and my fourth life is you yourself. Thus you are the most liked of all. (89)
इत एहि कपिश्रेष्ठ! गृष्हाणीमां मणिस्सजम्
स्कन्धे धारय मालां वै नोपेक्ष्यो हि कदाचन।। 90
Oh! Best amongst monkeys! Come to me. Take this chain of diamonds. Wear this around your neck. Never neglect this. (90)
श्रांतो सि हनुमन् नूनमायातो दूरवर्त्मना
गच्छ शीघ्रमितो देशात् सुरभिं गन्धमादनम्।। 91
Oh! Hanumān! You are tired because of the long journey. So go back immediately to the fruit-leaden Gandhamādanahill.’ (91)
इदमाज्ञावचो मालां शिरसाधारयत्कपिः
पुनः प्रदक्षिणीकृष्त्य प्रणनाम रघूत्तमम्।। 92
Accepting gratefully the chain of diamonds and the words of command (of Rāma), Hanumān circumambulated Raghurāma with palms joined in reverence. (92)
इत्थं गिरीशतनयो नुमतो विदेह
पुत्रीप्रियेण निजसोदरसंयुतेन
कृष्ष्णस्य राघवतयापि सविस्मयेन
ताक्ष्र्येण सन्नुतपदस्स्वपदं जगाम।। 93
Thus with the permission Rāma, of the husband of Sītā and the elder brother of Lakşmaņa, Hanumān left for His abode, the Mount Gandhamādana. By Kŗşņa’s command, surprised Garutmanta left for his own place. (93)
इति श्रीपराशरसंहितायां पराशरमैत्रेयेसंवादे गरुडगर्वापहरणं नाम अष्टाचत्वारिंशत्पटलः
