“The Story of Hanumān’s Entry into Pātāla Lanka”

(Hanumatpatāļa Lankā Praveśa Kathanam)

इति तस्मै समावेद्य दुर्दण्डी दण्डवद्रुवि
भाविकार्यमजानन्ती पपाताश्रुमुखी सती।। 1

Durgandee’s Narration

So narrating about self and about Rāma and Lakṣmaņa to Hanumān, even forgetting what she has to do next, Durgandee fell on the ground like a log with eyes full of tears. (1)

तामुत्थाप्य कपिश्रेष्ठः प्रोवाचेदं वचःस्थितः
एहि दुर्दण्डि भद्रन्ते माभूत्ते मनसो व्यथा।। 2

Hanumān, the best amongst the monkeys, lifted her and said so.

‘Oh! Durgandee! Be happy! You may not have any mental worry! (2)

अद्यप्रभष्ति माभैषीः भविता सुखिता स्वयम्
हनूमन्तं च मां विद्धि रामकार्यार्थमागतम्।। 3

Don’t fear from today onwards. Only happiness will be there in future. Know that I am Hanumān that came on the work of Rāma. (3)

मा कृष्थास्संशयं चात्र मम धर्मेण ते शपे
अधुना स्वर्णकुंम्भेन जलमानय भामिनि।। 4

Don’t have any doubt about that. I am giving you my solemn word righteously. Oh! Lady! Now bring water with the golden pot. (4)

मैरावणमहं हत्वा लोकण्टकमाहवे
राज्यार्हं नीलमेघं वै त्वत्पुत्रमभिषेचयै।। 5

Killing the world tormentor Mairāvaņa in a fight, I will coronate your son Neelamēgha, who is the most eligible ruler of this kingdom. (5)

सहैवावां गमिष्यावः मैरावणपुरं प्रति
इति दत्ताभया साध्वी हनूमन्तमुवाच सा।। 6

We will go together to the Mairāvaņapura.’ On Hanumān’s assurance that noble woman Durgandee said so. (6)

सत्यमेव त्वयोक्तं वै शरणागतवत्सल!
किंतु तस्य पुरं धीमन् दुष्प्रवेशं सुरासुरैः।। 7

‘Oh! Dear one to those seeking your protection! What you tell is indeed the truth. Oh! Intelligent One! But that Mairāvaņa’s city is impossible to be entered by gods as well as demons. (7)

शम्भोर्वरप्रसादेन तपसा तोषितस्य च
अस्ति तस्य पुरद्वारि तुला सूक्ष्मा विनिर्मिता।। 8

By the grace of Lord Śiva, pleased via penance, a miniature weighing balance (tulā; weighing scales) is installed at the entrance to the city. (8)

त्वामारुह्य विशेद्बाह्ये निर्गच्छेद्वा तदन्तरम्।। 9

As soon as you go near the interior of that weighing balance comes out. (9)

किंतु मैरावणीयानां पदातिरथवाजिनाम्
गजानामुष्ट्रवामीनां गतागमनयोरपि।। 10

But while Mairāvaņa’s foot soldiers, chariots. horses, elephants, camels, mares and others going in or coming out, (10)

न भङ्गमशनुते चैषा न कम्पं नातिविस्वनम्
न भ्रंशो वापि गन्तष्णां महादेवप्रसादतः।। 11

By the grace of Lord Śiva, that weighing balance neither bends, shakes, makes noise or breaks. (11)

सूक्ष्माणामपि जन्तूनां मैरावणविरोधिनाम्
गतागमनयोस्सद्यः तुलाभङ्गो भवेद्ध्रुवम्।। 12

But if enemies of Mairāvaņa cross it, even if they are only tiny creatures, that weighing balance bends immediately. (12)

भङ्गे तुलागुणे तस्मिन्नारूढे सति ते प्यथ
सव्म्जायते महाशब्दो भेर्याघातो रणे यथा।। 13

As soon as the enemy goes on to that weighing balance, it bends and a great sound emanates, as though from battle drums. (13)

श्रुत्वा तमतुलं शब्दं मैरावणभटाः क्रुधाः
सहायुधा रणोत्साहा वेष्टयेयुस्समन्ततः।। 14

The moment that great noise raises, angry and heavily armed soldiers of Mairāvaņa, intent on fighting pounce from all sides. (14)

तान्दृष्ष्ट्वा शतशो वीरान् तुलाभ्रष्टः परः पुमान्
विभीयादतिधीरो पि त्यजेद्वा विक्लवो प्यसून्।। 15

Seeing hundreds of such warriors, that balance-disturbing enemy intruder, however resolute he may be, gets terribly frightened or dies instantaneously out of worry. (15)

तस्मादिदं पुरद्वारं मैरावणविरोधिना
गन्तुं न शक्यते नूनं त्वया मतिमतां वर।। 16

Oh! Best among the wise! Because of the above reason, you, an enemy of Mairāvaņa cannot go through the entrance of the city.’ (16)

इति तस्या वचष्श्रुत्वा हनुमानुष्ट्रवाहनः
विस्मयं परमं लेभे परमाष्चर्यवर्णनात्।। 17

Hearing Durgandee, the camel-rider Hanumān was wonder struck at such strange description. (17)

कपिः प्रोवाच दुर्दण्डीं पुरदर्शनकौतुकः
मां प्रापय पुरं साध्वि घटे धृष्त्वा प्रयत्नतः।। 18

Hanumān Plans Attack

Enthusiastic in visiting the city of Mairāvaņa, Hanumān said so to Durgandee. ‘Oh! Noble lady! Please keep me in this (golden) pot and take me to that city. (18)

शमीपत्रप्रमाणं च करिष्ये देहमीदृशम्।
तुलारोहणवेलायां भङगस्तस्या भवेद्यदि।। 19

I will make my body small like the size of a Bammi tree leaf. While crossing, if those scales tilt or break, (19)

जलपूर्णमपि स्वर्णं प्रापयांतःपुरे घटम्
तदाह्यहं कष्तार्थः स्यां तवार्थो पि भविष्यति।। 20

Just carry this pot with water into the inner palace. Rest, I will take necessary action. Your desire will also be fulfilled.’ (20)

मधुरं वचनं वाक्यं श्रुत्वा सा प्रमुमोद ह।। 21

Hearing such sweet word of Hanumān, Durgandeewas happy. (21)

इत्येवमुक्त्वा वचनं कपीन्द्रः
शमीच्छदाकारधरो हि विद्वान्।
जलाप्लुतस्वर्णघटीकपालकं
समालिलिंगाच्युतविक्रमक्रमः।। 22

As mentioned above, all-knowing Hanumān took the size and form of a Bammi tree leaf, entering that pot full of water, courageous as He is, sat holding a piece of the pot. (22)

तथाविधं सूक्ष्मशरीरधारिणं
कपीश्वरं स्वर्णघटाश्रयान्तरम्।
बभार हेमाचलदुर्भरं हि सा
न सो पि सत्त्वे लघुरल्पमात्रकः।। 23

Though Hanumān, the lord of the monkeys, entered into the pot in micro-form, the pot as heavy as the Mount Mēru, Durgandee carried it easily; Hanumān is small only in size, but not in weight. (23)

तथापि सा भाविशुभानुसारतः
प्रयत्नतो नीरघटं सुबिभ्रती।
तुलावशद्दुर्घटशुत्रघट्टनं
प्राकारमाद्यं प्रथमं जगाम वै।। 24

Yet, in view of the auspicious events that are to take place, with effort, she carried the pot to the first perimeter entrance first, the one with the impeding ‘scales’ contraption. (24)

ततस्तुलाभङ्गविशङ्किनी स्वयं
स्खलत्यथ न्यासविलासमन्थरा।
निरन्तराये कुरु कार्यसिद्धये
कपेरिति ध्यातनिजेष्टदेवता।। 25

Fight with the Demons

Then she prayed fervently to her desired gods to see that no hindrance is caused to Lord Hanumān’s mission, stopping her slowed and hampered walk due to the fear that those scales may not break. (25)

निधायांघ्रिं तु दुर्दण्डी तुलाप्रथमकर्मठे
परस्मिन्नपरं कर्म चक्रे बुद्धिं सुनिश्चयाम्।। 26

With a determination and will power, intent on performing the task, she stepped into the first entrance with the hindering ‘scales’ contraption. (26)

तद्विरोधिकपिस्पर्शात् भज्यमाने तुलागुणे
सव्म्जातो निष्ठुरशशब्दः वज्राशनिसमध्वनिः।। 27

Immediately on the touch of the enemy monkey, the needle of the scales bent and unbearable thunder like sound emanated. (27)

तेन शब्देन महता दुर्दण्डी राक्षसी भयात्
जलपूर्णघटं शीघ्रं प्राकारान्तर्विन्यक्षिपत्।। 28

Frightened by that terrible sound, demoness Durgandee immediately carried the pot inside the perimeter. (28)

अथास्मिन्नंतरे क्रूरा राक्षसा द्वारपालकाः
महाशूरा महेष्वासा तुलाद्वारतले स्थिताः।। 29

Instantaneously the cruel and courageous, wielders of big bows standing guard at that ‘scales’ entry, demons – (29)

कांस्यलौहमयाकाराः षष्टिकोट्यो महारथाः
ऊध्र्ववक्त्रो भेरिवचस्त्रिशिरो व्योमवीक्षणाः।। 30

Those having the form of bronze and other metals, the 600 million great chariot warriors, the ones with heads towards the sky, the one with voices loud as a war drum, the ones with three heads, the ones with eyes on the top of heads, (30)

शार्दूलमुखनाम्ना च तथा गार्दभनिस्वनः
शतजिह्नो दीर्घजिह्नो शमुखो वक्रनाशिकः।। 31

The ones with the name ‘tiger-faced’, ones with voice like that of the donkeys, ones with a hundred tongues, ones with a very long tongue, ones with a dog’s face, ones with a bent nose, (31)

व्याघ्रास्यश्शूलदंष्ट्रश्च धूमनेत्रष्चतुर्मुखः
हस्तिकर्णः खड्गरोमा रक्ताक्षो दीर्घरोमकः।। 32

Ones with the mouth of a tiger, ones with canine teeth that are long and sharp as javelin, ones with smoky eyes, ones with four faces, ones with ears like those of an elephant, ones with hair like knives, ones with red eyes, ones with long hair, (32)

सर्परोमा जम्बुमाली कालान्तः कालकिंकरः
अग्निवर्णो विरूपाक्षः तथा वृश्चिकरोमकः।। 33

(Named) Sarparōma, Jambumāli, Kālānyaka, Kāalakinkara, Agņivarņa, Viroopākşa, Vŗśchikarōma, (33)

एवमाद्या महामायाश्शतशो थ सहस्त्रशः
तुलाशब्दहतास्तूर्णमश्वा इव कशा हताः।। 34

Such great warriors in hundreds and thousands came running in like whipped horses, alarmed by the great sound of the scales. (34)

विरोधिजनसव्म्चारषङ्काव्याकुलमानसाः
सायुधास्सपरीवाराः तं देशं समुपागताः।। 35

They came rushing there along with their followers and weapons with a disturbed mind suspecting that an enemy trespass took place. (35)

अथ क्षिप्तघटीरन्ध्रान्निष्क्रम्य च शनैर्भुवि
ववृथे वानरश्रेष्ठः प्रावृषीव घनाघनः।। 36

Then the great monkey Hanumān came out of the pot, stepped on to the ground and started gaining size like the clouds during the rainy season.(36)

वर्धमानमहाकायं दीप्यमानं सतेजसा
अभिजग्मुर्दितेः पुत्राः शलभा इव पावकम्।। 37

Like moths attracted towards fire, the demons went to Hanumān, whose body is ever growing and shining bright. (37)

स हत्वा भिहतो दैत्यैः मैरावणसमीपगैः
प्रवृष्द्धः क्रोधताम्राक्षश्चूर्णयामास तान् कपिः।। 38

Hit by the demon aides of Mairāvaņa, Hanumān, with anger-reddened eyes, grew to gigantic proportions and killed them by pounding into pulp. (38)

तथा कृतेषु सर्वेषु राक्षसेषु हनूमता
वायुवेगसमायुक्तो निर्ययौ मत्स्यवल्लभः।। 39

As Hanumān was beating all the demons into pulp, Mastyavallabha came there with the speed of wind, challenging Hanumān. (39)

युद्धायाकारयामास ताडयन्नुरुमण्डलम्
हनुमंतम्महात्मानं तत्समो मत्स्यवल्लभः।। 40

Masytavallabha

Equal to Hanumān. Matsyavallabha, slapping his own thigh as a warning called Hanumān for a fight. (40)

स मारुत इव श्रीमान् सक्रुद्धश्चॉरुघट्टनात्
तस्योरसि शिलास्पर्शमुष्टिघातैरताडयत्।। 41

Angered by that thigh-slapping, Hanumān, like a powerful gale, hit Matsyavallabha on the chest with his stone like fist. (41)

तत्प्रहारविदीर्णोराः मानयन्पवनात्मजम्
मूर्घ्नि सन्ताडयामास पाणिभ्याम्मत्स्यवल्लभः।। 42

As his chest was broken, understanding Hanumān’s power, Matsyavallabha hit Hanumān’s head with both of his hands. (42)

स तेन तलघातेन दंष्ट्राग्ररसनः कपिः
विमुव्म्चन्नश्रूणि नेत्राभ्यां मुहूर्तं ध्यानमास्थितः।। 43

Beacause of that powerful hit, tongue showing between the teeth and tears falling from the eyes, Hanumān stood meditating for a moment. (43)

अथ धैर्यं समास्थाय मारुतिर्भीमविक्रमः
धावति स्मातिवेगेन जिघृश्चुः मत्स्यवल्लभम्।। 44

Then gathering courage, great valorous Hanumān ran to catch Matsyavallabha. (44)

सिंहसंहननोपेतः शफरीनन्दनस्तथा
ग्रीवां ग्रहीतुकामो स्य वितेने प्लुतिलाघवम्।। 45

Matsyavallbha, capable of killing lions, jumped forwards to catch the throat of Hanumān. (45)

यावद्गलं न जग्राह मारुतेर्मत्स्यनन्दनः
गृष्हीत्वा पादयोस्तावद् भ्रामयामास तं कपिः।। 46

Before Matsyavallbha could catch His throat, Hanumān caught him by feet and started revolving him round and round. (46)

सो पि युद्धविशेषज्ञः मात्स्यो मत्सरविह्नलः
भ्राम्यमाणो हनूमन्तं जलूकावद्गले ग्रहीत्।। 47

Knowing the fighting techniques well, Matsyavallabha, though he was being twirled around, suddenly caught Hanumān’s throat like a leech. (47)

गृष्हीतकण्ठनालस्सन् कपीन्द्रो युद्धसंभ्रमः।।
बलाद्विमोचयामास गलेग्राहिणमत्स्यजम्।। 48

But Hanumān, whose throat was caught by Matsyavallabha, forcibly freed self from him, catching hold of him by throat. (48)

व्यर्थीकष्तोद्यमो मात्स्यः क्रोधताम्रविलोचनः
जघानोरसि मुष्टिभ्यां घनाभ्यामिव मारुतेः।। 49

As all his efforts failed, Matsyavallabha with reddened eyes out of anger, hit Hanumān on His chest. (49)

हनूमानपि पार्षिभ्यां घातयामास शफरिं
एवं समबलौ युद्धं चक्रतुर्भीमविक्रमौ
मात्स्यशाखामृगौ घोरमव्यवस्थजयाजयौ।। 50

Hanumān kicked Matsyavallabha, in turn, with his heels. In this manner, equal in power and courage Hanumān and Matsyavallabha were fighting ferociously; no one able to judge who will win or who will lose. (50)

अथान्तरे महाप्राज्ञो हनुमान्नीतिनैपुणः
चिन्तयामास धर्मात्मा को न्वयं युद्धदुर्मदः।। 51

Hanumān’s Son!

Then Hanumān, a great scholar, knower of moral concepts and righteous, started thinking who could be so powerful in fighting technique. (51)

मदीयमुष्टिघातेन पाष्र्णिघातद्वयेन च।
प्राणान् धत्ते पुमान् वीरो युद्धायाह्नयते पुनः।। 52

‘This warrior has not only survived my powerful punches and kicks, but is calling me for fighting.’ (52)

अथाब्रवीद् वायुपुत्रः गर्वितं मत्स्यवल्लभम्।
को भवान् पुरुषश्रेष्ठ मत्समानपराक्रमः।। 53

Then Hanumān said so to the prideful Matsyavallabha. ‘Oh! Good man! You are equal to me in valor; who are you?’ (53)

मूध्र्नि संताडितो पि त्वं पाष्न्रिभ्यां पृष्ष्ठभागतः।
प्राणान्पुनर्धारयसि कस्त्वं ब्रूहि यथार्थतः।। 54

You survived even when you were punched on the head and when kicked on the spine. Really, tell me who you are.’ (54)

श्रुत्वा तु वचनं न्याय्यं मारुतेर्मत्स्यवल्लभः
स न्यवेदयदात्मानं पुत्रं हनुमतः प्रभोः।। 55

Hearing the words of the virtuous son of the Wind God, Matsyavallabha told that he is the son of the great-soul Hanumān. (55)

पुनः प्राह कपिश्रेष्ठः विस्मयाविष्टमानसः
को वा हनूमान् मतिमन् त्वं वा तस्य कथ सुतः।। 56

Greatly surprised Hanumān asked so again. ‘Oh! Intelligent One! Who is Hanumān? How were you born to Him? (56)

का वा ते जननी लोके कुत्र वासः परतंप!
इति संचोदितस्तेन विनयावनतस्सुधीः।। 57

Who is your mother? Oh! Destroyer of enemies! Where do you live?’ So asked by Hanumān. Reverent Matsyavallabha (57)

आत्मवृत्तं परं तस्मै वक्तुं समुपचक्रमे
पुरा दाशरथी रामो रघुवंषसमुद्रवः
अप्रमेयगुणश्श्रिमान् सर्वभूतदयापरः।। 58

Started telling so to Hanumān about himself. ‘Once Lord Rāma, the scion of the Raghu clan, full of all great characteristics, rich in all senses, kind towards all creatures, son of king Daśaratha (58)

पितुस्सत्यप्रतिज्ञस्य प्रतिज्ञामनुपालयन्
सीतया धर्मपत्न्या च लक्ष्मणेनानुजेन च
विवेश दण्डकारण्यं तापसाश्रममुत्तमम्।। 59

Obeying the command of his truth-stickler father, He entered the Dandaka forest, the most auspicious and abode of great seers performing penance, along with His wife Seetā and younger brother Lakşmaņa.(59)

तस्य भार्यां महाभागां सर्वलक्षणलक्षिताम्
त्रिलोकसुन्दरीं सीतां श्रुत्वा दृष्ष्ट्वा च मैथिलीम्
राघवौ वव्म्चयित्वा हि रावणो हृतवान् शठः।। 60

Hearing about the great lady partner (of Rāma), full of auspicious features, most beautiful in the three worlds, Seetā, the wife of Rāma, and seeing her, the evil-doer Ravaņa abducted her, deceiving Rāma and Lakşmaņa. (60)

ततो रामस्सुदुःखार्तो मार्गमाणो वने प्रियां
सुग्रीवेण समायुक्तस्तेन सख्यं चकार सः।। 61

Then, as Śreerāma, very much grief stricken, was searching for His dear Seetā, was taken (by Hanumān) to meet Sugreeva, with whom friendship was concluded (by Hanumān). (61)

तं प्रतिज्ञाप्य राजानं सुग्रीवं प्राणसन्निभम्
उपलभ्य स सीताया वृष्त्तान्तं वायुनन्दनात्।। 62

Making dear friend Sugreeva the king (of Kişkinda), (Rāma) learning the information about (missing) Seetā from Hanumān, (62)

ततश्च रावणपुरीं लङ्कामब्धिपरीवृष्ताम्
ददर्श सपरीवारं मध्ये कल्लोलमालिनः।। 63

Along with His followers, Rāma saw the city Lanka of Rāvaņa that was surrounded by the sea and located amidst waves. (63)

समुद्रं बद्धयामास गमनप्रतिबन्धकम्
कपयः पर्वताकाराः नानाविधविचेष्टिताः।। 64

Across the sea that became a big hurdle in going (to Lanka) Rāma built a bridge. Mountain sized monkeys behaving in different ways, (64)

इतस्ततो महाशैलानानीय दृष्ढ़विक्रमाः
समुद्रे पातयाव्म्चक्रुः स्थलीकर्तुं महाबलाः।। 65

Because they are strong-willed, powerful and very strong, the monkeys pulled up boulders found around and dumped into the sea to form a path (bridge). (65)

अस्ति कश्चिन्महाशूरो कपिर्मतिमतां वरः
हनुमन्नाम दुर्धर्षः पार्वतीप्रियनन्दनः।। 66

There is a very courageous monkey warrior among them. He is bet amongst the intelligent ones. He was the unconquerable son of mother Pārvati, named Hanumān. (66)

सुग्रीवाङ्गदमैंदादिसचिवो भीमविक्रमः
आनीता बहवश्शैलाः तेन बद्धुं सरित्पतिम्।। 67

Helped by aides like Sugreeva, Ańgada and Mainda, He is with a ferocious courage. Many a mountain were brought for building the path in sea by that Hanumān. (67)

तदा तस्याभवत्स्वेदः परिश्रमसमुद्रवः
ललाटपट्टिकायां वै मुक्तापर इवाबभौ।। 68

Then, because of the intense work being carried out he sweated a lot. That (sweat) was shining like pearls on his forehead. (68)

तज्जलं पाणिनाकृष्ष्य चिक्षेपाब्धिजले कपिः
समुद्रान्तःस्थिता काचिद्दीर्घदेही च नामतः।। 69

Hanumān wiped His forehead with hand and dropped the sweat into the sea. In the sea, one Deerghadēhi named (69)

मत्स्याङ्गना महासत्वा क्षुधया क्षुब्धमानसा
तत्स्वदेजलमत्युग्रं पीत्वा च सुखिता भवत्।। 70

Female fish existed. That female fish drank that sweat of Hanumān and felt happy. (70)

सा सुतं जनयामास हनुमत्समविक्रम्
मत्स्यवल्लभनामानं इन्द्राद्यैरपि दुर्जयम्।। 71

Equal to Hanumān in courage and unconquerable even by Indra and others, Matsyavallbha named son was born to her. (71)

सो हं हनुमतः पुत्रो दीर्घदेही प्रसूर्मम
गन्धर्ववनिता पूर्वं मम माता पतिव्रता।। 72

I am that son born to Hanumān and Deerghadēhi. My mother was once a Gandharva (demi-god) lady, faithful to her husband (pativrata). (72)

मतङ्गमुनिषापेन मत्स्ययोनिं जगाम सा
दत्तशपावधिस्तेन प्रसन्नेन महर्षिणा।। 73

She took the life of a fish due to the curse of seer Matanga. Later, pleased (by her pleadings), that very seer blessed her with this limit to the curse. (73)

स्वेदोदकं कपीन्द्रस्य त्वन्मुखे निपतिष्यति
तदा गर्भो भवेदाशु भविता च सुतोदयः।। 74

‘Sometime in future sweat drops of Hanumān, the best among the monkey warriors, will fall in your mouth. You will become pregnant immediately. A son will be born to you. (74)

मत्स्यबल्लभनामाङ्कः हनूमत्समविक्रमः
गमिष्यसि तदा भूयः गान्धर्ववपुरेव तत्।। 75

Known as Matsyavallabha, he will be equal to Hanumān in courage. You will then gain your Gandharva form back. (75)

जातिस्मष्तिश्च ते भूयान्मत्स्यजन्मन्यपि स्फुटं
भूतभाविभवद्यत्तु ज्ञानमस्तु शुभाङ्गि ते।। 76

Oh! Adoring lady! You will clearly remember all about your previous life, even if you are a fish in this life. You will have knowledge about the past, present and future. (76)

इत्येवं मुनिना दिष्टा सद्यो मत्स्यशरीरिणी
सतामाज्ञा हि दुर्लंघ्या देवदानवमानुषैः।। 77

She took the form of a fish immediately, as commanded by seer Matanga. No one, gods or demons or humans, can disobey the orders of seers; is it not so. (77)

इत्येवमुपदिष्टम्मे मम मात्रा पुराविदा
तदाप्रभृष्त्यहं प्राज्ञ मातुर्वचनगौरवात्।। 78

So was I told by my mother, who had the knowledge of the past. Oh! Great wise one! Since then, out of respect in my mother’s words, (78)

वसाम्यस्मिन्पुरे रम्ये मैरावणवशानुगः
पालयन्तदिदं द्वारं भुंजे भोगान्यथेप्सितान्।। 79

I am living in this grand city as an aide of Mairāvaņa. I am living, enjoying guarding this gate. (79)

इदानीं त्वामहं पश्यन् प्रविष्टं द्वारसन्निधिम्
संप्राप्तः प्राप्तरोषस्सन् हन्तुकामो हतासुरम्।। 80

Now I am angry seeing You enter the portals of this gate. I am thinking of killing You for killing the demons. (80)

एवं निवेदितं सर्वं पृष्च्छकाय हिताय ते।। 81

Hanuman mellows

I told you all my history, because you asked me as a well-wisher.’ (81)

इत्युक्तवचनं मत्स्यवल्लभं कपिवल्लभः
कृष्पाप्रेमार्द्रचित्तस्सन् प्रत्युवाच वचो हितम्।। 82

Hanumān, the greatest among monkeys, with a heart full of kindness and love, said so pleasantly to Matsyavallabha. (82)

अहमेव हनूमान्वै हितः तव सुविक्रम!
रामकार्यवशान्नूनं आगतस्तव सन्निधिम्।। 83

‘Oh! Courageous one! I am that Hanumān, the one dear to you. I came to you on an errand on behalf of Lord Rāma. (83)

रामो दाशरथिस्तीत्र्वा सेतुं च सरितां पतिम्
लङ्कां निरोधयांचक्रुः कपिभिः पर्वतोपमैः।। 84

Śreerāma, the son of king Daśaratha, built a bridge, crossed the ocean and attacked Lanka with mountain-sized monkeys. (84)

ततो मैरावणः प्राप्तो रावणेनाभिचोदितः
वव्म्चयित्वा कपीन्सर्वान् गृष्हीत्वा राघवावपि
जगाम स्वपुरीं शीघ्रं तेना हं समुपागतः 85

Then, encouraged by Rāvaņa, Mairāvaņa brought Rāma and Lakşmņa to his city by deceiving all the monkey warriors.’ (85)

इत्युक्तवचनं तातं कपींद्रं मत्स्यवल्लभः
स्तुत्वा स्तुतिभिरथ्र्याभिः साष्टाङ्गं प्रणतो भवत्।। 86

Matsyavallabha praised so telling father Hanumān by reciting invocatory hymns and performed prostrate bowing at His feet. (86)

उत्थाप्य कपिनाथस्तु समाघ्राय च मूर्धनि
आलिलिङ्ग सुतं श्रीमान् परमानन्दनिर्भरः।। 87

Hanumān lifted Matsyavallabha, kissed the top of his forehead and, with great happiness and hugged him. (87)

ततो ब्रवीत्कपिश्रेष्ठः प्रश्रयावनतं सुतम्
भवान्ममात्मजो नूनं समपौरुषविक्रमः।। 88

Then, Hanumān said so to his obedient son. ‘Being equal to me in courage and strength, you are definitely my son. (88)

देवदानवगन्धर्वपतगोरगकिन्नराः
न स्थातंमे ग्रतः षक्ताः किं पुनर्युद्धकर्मणि।। 89

Celestial beings, demons, demi-gods gandharvas, great birds, serpant clan, scorpions, kinneras (also demi-gods) cannot even stand before me. What to talk of fighting? (89)

बिभेम्यतिप्रशंसायाः मम धर्मेण संशपे
जगत्त्रये पि कश्चिन्मे प्रतियोद्धा न विद्यते।। 90

I hesitate to praise too much. I am telling you as my duty. There is no one who can face me in the three worlds. (90)

ततो मत्पुत्रभावेन युधि स्थित्वा ममाग्रतः
वज्राशनिसमप्रख्याः मुष्टिघाताशृष्णीकृष्ताः।। 91

But you stood firm against me, because you are my son. You could face easily my punches that are strong as (Indra’s) diamond weapon (vajrāyudha) and the thunders. (91)

अतश्चिरं सुखं भुंक्ष्व दीर्घमायुर्नवं वयः
लभस्वाष्टसुतान्सौम्यान् भद्रान्भद्रगुणान्वितान्।। 92

Hence, enjoy happiness with a long life and youthfulness. Be blessed with eight sons that would be pleasant, good and with desired characters. (92)

अद्यप्रभृष्ति ते पुत्र माभूत्क्वापि पराजयः
स्वस्ति ते स्तु गमिष्यामि कार्यं ह्यस्ति ममाग्रतः।। 93

‘Oh! Dear son! You will know no defeat from now onwards. You be auspicious. I have an important work. Hence, I am going.’ (93)

इत्युक्तवंतं वचनं कपीश्वरं
प्रवेशयित्वा पुरमध्यगह्नरं
तदा सुतस्या नुजगाम मदिरं
शतं पदानां स्फुटसौहृदक्रमः।। 94

Escorting, so speaking Hanumān to the middle area of the city of Pātāla Lanka, son Matsyvallabha, with clear exhilaration of love started going to his palace. (94)
