“The Episode on Deception by Mairāvaņa”

(Mairāvaņamayā Prakaraņam)

Mytrēya:

“Oh! Great soul! Parāśarā! The one like an ocean of knowledge and sciences (śāstras)! Tell me more about the life history of Lord Hanumān. Oh! Great Seer! I am wishing to hear of that great history.” (1)

Parāśrā:

“Oh! Yōgi Mytrēya! Listen with attention the wonderful, vast and bliss giving history of Lord Hanumān. (2)

Long time ego Śrīrāma, son of Daśaratha, having destroyed Rāśvaņa, happily returned to Ayōdhya city and lived happily with relatives and friends. (3)

Then, as the great son of Daśaratha was resplendently seted on the throne, Sage Agastya, the main one among those knowledgeable about the Supreme Being and a renowned Yōgi, came to see Him (Rāma). (4)

Seeing the most auspicious Agastya so coming, Raghurāma, the destroyer of enemies, received him with a reverential bow and worshipped him. (5)

So worshipped by Rāma, that good Brāhmin Agastya, with a heart full of bliss, said so Rāma, the one with a morality ting voice. (6)

‘Oh! Rāma! You became auspicious and grateful in deeds. Why? Because Rāvaņa was killed by you. Oh! Great soul! Jānaki was brought back from Rāvaņa’s abode. (7)

Guru – Father’s command was fulfilled and the kingdom was obtained without any hitch. Hence, wealthy (in all respects) Śreerāmachandra! Enjoy this hereditary kingdom well.’ (8)

Himself a good talker, Rāma answered to the great sage talking in this manner. (9)

‘Oh! Great soul! All this was obtained by your benevolence and the help and kindness of the all capable Hanumān. (10)

There is none comparable to Hanumānas a warrior, in strength, in friendship, in courage or in devotion to the master. (11)

I repeat that. Be it the meeting of relatives and obtaining the kingdom, were possible only due to the intellectual powers of Hanumān.(12)

The present auspiciousness or the auspiciousness of the future have all happened because of Him. Why to tell so much? There is no doubt that He is Me.’ (13)

Feeling happy hearing these words, Agastya, rich in powers of sacrificial observances, narrated the story concerning Hanumān to Rāma, the best among kings and speaker of only the truth.(14)

Agastya:

‘Oh! Great warrior Rāma! Listen to the story of that monkey warrior that is worthy to be listened by You and it is full of Hanumān’s bravery and courage. (15)

Know the stories which, on hearing, break the hearts of cowards and go deep into the hearts of the brave. (16)

He built a protective wall during the war with his tail around You along with your brother and your forces (17)

So hiding You and your forces, that courageous Hanumān, just left a hole by way of door and himself stood as guard there. (18)

The, deciding that it is impossible to win over you, Rāvaņa went to Mairāvaņa (also known as Mahirāvaņa, a cousin of Rāvaņa, and expert in occult sciences and illusion; lives in the subterranean realms (pātāla) and said so to him, (19)

Rāma, the long-armed conqueror of all enemies can destroy me and all my forces just in one night. (20)

That Hanumān is protecting the entire army by encircling with his tail. Hence, by some way or other, deceive Hanumān, (21)

Oh! Warrior! Abduct the two brothers Rāma and Lakşmaņa and quickly go (with them) to the subterranean Lanka (pātāla Lanka). Only then it will be good for me. (22)

You are best in the art of deception (magic!). (You are) a friend dear to my life. Oh! One capable of destroying enemies! This help has to be done by you now.’ (23)

So told by the evil minded Rāvaņa, that illusionist and best amongst demons Mairāvaņa replied so. (24)

‘Oh! Great King! I am fortunate to be so pleaded by you. The fruit of thepurposeof my birth is achieved today. (25)

It was asked by you the lord of the worlds (lōkanātha). I am motivated to do whatever you ask, whether it is a deed that ought to be done or ought not to be done. (26)

Oh! Great shouldered one! For having you as a seeker from me, I will worship in life after lifewith my Five-Lives. (27)

I will definitely gain life, if I, desirous of fame, fulfill your desire when I am still alive. (28)

Oh! Lord! What use do I have for you if I cannot perform this much for you? I will become very infamous, if I do not perform that. (29)

Oh! One with intellectual powers! Rāvaņa! You go and be satisfied.’ (30)

Hearing these words of Mairāvaņa, demon king Rāvaņa hugged him and shed tears of joy. (31)

Then, with a peaceful mind, King Rāvaņa, thinking about Rāma, went to his inner place (antahpura) in a chariot drawn by fast horses. (32)

Demon Śooceemukha Fails

Thus answering to Rāvaņa that was intent on fighting war with Rāma, Mairāvaņa entered his house that is full with demon veterans. (33)

There, seeing a demon named Śooceemukha with a frightening countenance, respectfully said so. (34)

‘Oh! Great shouldered one! One who cannot be won by neither demons nor gods! Śooceemukha! We are facing a duty that cannot be performed by even gods and demons. (35)

Everyone knows that it is easy for you, the well-wisher, to perform. Hanumān is protecting the monkey army that came to Lanka by forming his tail as a protective perimeter wall. (36)

It is impossible for even air to enter that protective wall; what to tell about others like demons and demi-gods kinnaras. (37)

Oh! Valiant Śooceemukha! You are an expert in various solutions (to such problems). Oh! Expert miner! Dig your way through earth and enter the place of the monkey army within that protective wall. (38)

Immediately put Rāma and Lakşmaņa sleeping there in a box and alert fully bring them. (39)

If you bring them so, I will be very happy to see you successful and will fulfill all that you seek.’ (40)

So beseeched by Mairāvaņa, demon Śooceemukha, bowed to Mairāvaņa and left for the army ruled by Rāma and Lakşmaņa. (41)

As he started digging through the earth under the army and touched the protective wall made of Hanumān’s tail, his face got broken. (42)

Then, full of shame, Śooceemukha came to Mairāvaņa. Seeing Śooceemukha standing forlorn with a bent head and face broken by the enemy’s power, said so to Mairāvaņa. (43)

Oh! Śooceemukha! How your face became so dreadful? Let me hear the truth of th eentire episode. (44)

‘Oh! Great one! Mairāvaņa! As per your command I reached the protective wall of tail protecting the army of Rāma. (45)

Thee I started digging the protective enclosure (made of Hanumān tail) with my face, sharp as a needle and strong as a diamond. (46)

As I touched a hair at the tip of the tail of Hanumān, with which that enclosure was made, my face got cracked. Oh! Kind one! Please protect me.’(47)

As all the other demons are listening to the narration the happening, with a heavy voice and tearful eyes, Śooceemukha fell at the feet of Mairāvaņa.(48)

Lifting and hugging the one so fallen at his feet, (Mairāvaņa) removed his sadness as well as tears. (49)

Demon Mooşikamukha Fails

With body overtaken by the anger of great illusionist, Mairavana said to one demon named Mooşikamukha (rat-faced) that is adept in many illusionary tricks. (50)

‘Go immediately to the place where Rāma’s army is. By some trick or other bring Rāma and Lakşmaņa to me. I will give you half of my kingdom, if you do so.’ (51)

On hearing these words of Mairāvaņa, demon Mooşikamukha said, ‘Oh! Mairāvaņa! Digging up from the subterranean world up to the place where Rāma and Lakşmaņa were sleeping on the ground, (52)

Oh! Great soul! I will bring to you.’ So saying, Mooşikamukha proceeded towards the monkey army. (53)

Seeing the enclosure made of the tail of Hanumān, that is taller than the heights of Brahmalōka (highest heavenly realm), Mooşikamukha, (54)

Thought, ‘How can I enter this enclosure made of tail? How can I see Rāma and Lakşmaņa sleeping there?’ (55)

How can I return again?’ He was wonder-struck seeing that diamond hard enclosure made of tail. (56)

Then he hit the strong Hanumān tail with his snout. Oh! Sage Mytrēya! Just by touching the tail of Hanumān, the face of Mooşakamukha got broken. (57)

At that very instance, Mooşikamukha turned back, deeply hurt. Mooşikamukha reached near Mairāvaņa in a sorrowful state. (58)

Seeing the badly distorted face of Mooşikamukha, with a very angry mind, saw a very cruel demon, (59)

Demon Pāşāņbhēdi Fails

Called Pāşāņbhēdi (breaker of stones), performer of very heinous deeds, and said as follows. (60)

‘You can break boulders. You know illusion tricks. You are noble and glorious. You know all the solutions to problems. Only you can defeat the enemy. (61)

Stones get broken by a mere touch of yours. (62)

Hence, by breaking the enclosure made of Hanumān’s tail, bring Rāma and Lakşmaņa sleeping in the center of the army immediately. (63)

So told, Pāşāņabhēdhi, went to the monkey army, saw the enclosure made of the tail of Hanumān of great height, got angry and that Pāşāņabhēdhi, consumer of entire human beings, hit it with his head. (64)

By the mere touch with Hanumān’s tail his head was broken and Pāşāņabhēdhi returned to Mairāvaņa. (65)

Seeing the broken bodied Pāşāņabhēdhi, Mairāvaņa fell into disturbed thoughts. (66)

Mairāvaņa himself Acts

Then, holding medicinal herbs, that great illusion master Mairāvaņa reached the army of Rāma and Lakşmaņa. (67)

On seeing Hanumān, the greatest of the great at the entrance hole of the enclosure, greatly surprised, the illusionist Mairāvaņa, in the garb of fake (Maya) Vibheeşaņa went close to him. (68)

(Said,) ‘Oh! Great warrior! Son of Wind God! Hanumān! Demons with great occult powers and highly enraged go around at night time. (69)

You guard the enclosure by being alert and not minding fatigue and sleep, with your limitless energy. (70)

I will just check on the Rāma and Lakşmaņa the scions of the Raghu clan, sleeping on leaves spread on the ground. (71)

I will return in a trice. You be awake and alert.’ On Mairāvaņa, in the garb of Vibheesāņa telling so, (72)

Out of friendship (towards Vibheeşaņa), Hanumān said so to Mairāvaņa (in the garb of Vibheeşaņa). ‘Oh! Friend! Go near the army through the space between my thighs.’ (73)

Then accordingly, great illusion master Mairāvaņa, behaving like Vibheeşaņa, entered the enclosure through the space between Hanumān’s thighs. (74)

Seeing the sleeping Rāma and Lakşmaņa, Mairāvaņa threw the medicinal herbs (on them) that he brought. (75)

As Rāma and Lakşmaņa fainted under the influence of those herbs, using illusion technique, he put them in a box and covered it with a cloth. (76)

Keeping that box under his arm-pit, Mairāvaņa came back to Hanumān. Seeing them, Hanumān asked him whether Rāma and Lakşmaņa are fine. (77)

So asked, Mairāvaņa the trickster, told that all are well and said other words appropriate to the occasion. (78)

‘Oh! Friend in need! Monkey warrior! Well versed in various sceinces! In this ghastly night, the evil doing demons (79)

Proud of their strength, try even to come here and enter. Hence, you, desirous of helping Rāma and this monkey army (80)

Protect well; definitely. They have none other to protect them.’ Telling such helpful words to Hanumān, Mairāvņa reached his city in a trice. (81)

By just bringing Rāma and Lakşmaņa by trickery, that thick-headed demon thought that he was successful. (82)

Then he gifted cloths, ornaments and great precious stones to poor people, out of happiness and heedless of the consequences. (83)

Durgaņdee

Then Mairāvņa called his own sister named Durgaņdee, told her so affectionately. (84)

‘Oh! Fabulous one! Let you be auspicious! You may not be troubled by any mental ailment! A festival is going to take place in Mahānadi for the mother goddess Durga. (85)

I will give that great goddess these humans, Rāma and Lakşmaņa as sacrifice (bali). For that, these are to be kept in fresh water. (86)

Oh! Durgaņdee! Go quickly and bring, in golden pots water along with lotuses, available in the lake outside the enclosure.’ (87)

Durgandee became sad and with a heavy heart went towards the lake with a golden pot in hand. (88)

Seeing Rāma and Lakşmana, her heart was full of compassion and she cried. (89)
