“The Story of the History of Mainda”
(Maindacaritrakathanam)
श्रीमैत्रये :-
श्लोक:
आव्म्जनेयचतुर्विंशत्यक्षरी मुनिसत्तम!
अष्टादशाक्षरी चेति माहात्म्यमुभयोर्वद।। 1
Sage Mytrēya:
“Oh! Sage Parāśara! I bow to you. Please tell me about the greatness of the two Hanumān mantras – 24-Lettered (caturvinsatykşarī) mantra and the 18-Lettered (aşţādaśākşarī) mantra”. (1)
पराशर उवाच
मन्त्रोद्धारं प्रवक्ष्यामि त्रूणु मैत्रेय तत्त्वत:
आदौ प्रणवमुच्चार्य नमो भगवते तत:।। 2
Seer Parāśara:
18 and 24- Lettered Maha Mantras
“Oh! Mytrēya! I am telling the origin of Hanumān mantras. Listen with attention. After first pronouncing ‘Ōmm’, then say ‘namō bhagavatē’, (2)
आव्म्जनेयाय च महाबलायेति तत: परम्
स्वाहापदं समुच्चार्य मनुरष्टादशात्मक:।। 3
Then say ‘Āńjanēyāya’, then say ‘mahābalāya’, then ‘swāhā’ – this is the aşţādaśākşari maha mantra, that is ‘Ōmm namō bhagavatē Āńjanēyāya mahābalāya swāhā’. (3)
मन्त्र एष क्रमेणैव ज्ञेयस्सर्वैरुपासकै:
श्रीयुक्तहनुमच्छब्द: पूर्वमन्त्रेणोदीरित:।। 4
This mantra has to be know by the worshippers (upāsakāh) in proper order as follows. In the first part (poorvabhāga), if ‘Śrī’ is joined with the word ‘Hanumātē’ and said, (4)
तथैव स चतुर्विंशत्यक्षरी मन्त्र उच्यते 5
Then it is known as the 24-Lettered caturvinsatykşarī mantra, that is, ‘Ōmm namō bhagavatē Śrī Hanumātē Āńjanēyāya mahābalāya swāhā’. (5)
अस्मिन् मन्त्रद्वये पूज्यो ह्मगस्त्यो भगवान् ऋषि:
गायत्री परमा छन्द: हनुमान् देवता भवेत्।। 6
These two mantras are are most worshippable. For these, Agastya is the ŗşi (sage), Gāyatrī is the meter (chandas) and Hanumān is the Lord. (6)
प्रणवं बीजमित्युक्तं स्वाहा शक्तिरुदीरिता
आव्म्जनेयाय च ततो कीलकं समुदाह्मतम्।। 7
The seed of the cosmic sound ‘Ōmm’ is said to be the seed, ‘swāhā’ as the power (śakti) and ‘Āńjanēya’ as the key (keelakam) of this mantra. (7)
चिन्तितार्थप्रदं देवं शान्ताकारं महाप्रभुम्
सततं चिन्तयेच्चित्ते हनुमन्तमनूपमम्।। 8
Power of the Maha Mantras Dhyanam
All may always think of Hanumān, the boon giver, peaceful Formed, lord of the universe and uncomparable god.(8)
मनोजवं मारुततुल्यवेगं
जितेन्द्रियं बुद्धिमतां वरिष्ठं
वातात्मजं वानरयूथमुख्यं
श्रीरामदूतं शिरसा नमामि।। 9
I bow and fold my hands to the one faster than the mind, fast as wind, with controlled senses, best amongst the wise, son of Wind God, chief among the monkey warriors and disciple of Lord Śrīrāma. (9)
इति ध्यात्वा जपेन्मंत्रं अयुत: नियुत: पुमान्
सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति सर्वत्र विजयी भवेत्।। 10
A person so meditating, strictly following the rules, and that recites the mantra 10,000 times will get all the wishes fulfilled and emerge victorious everywhere. (10)
अत्रेतिहासं वक्ष्यामि त्रूणु चित्रं मुनीश्वर!
मैन्दो नाम द्विजवरो ज्ञानी परमपावन:।। 11
Power of the Maha Mantras
I am telling you a historical fact about this, Oh! Mytrēya! There was a well versed Brāhmin once known as Mainda. He was very knowledgeable, very friendly; (11)
वेदशास्त्रार्थतत्त्वज्ञ: सुन्दरीनगरे स्थित:
उक्तमन्त्रद्वयजपासक्तिमान् धर्मतत्पर:।। 12
That very fluent one in all the aspects of Vēda was living in Sundarīnagara city. Stickler to virtuous life, he regularly recited the above two mantras. (12)
ततो मैन्दद्विज: काशीं यातुकामस्तपोधन:
गड्गां नदीं समासाद्य नावमारुह्म दुस्तराम्।। 13
With the power of penances and wishing to go on pilgrimage to Kāśī city, Mainda reached the uncrossable River Gangā and having boarded a boat, (13)
गड्गामध्ये च शिथिला नौकासीज्जलपूरिता
नावं दृष्ट्वा जलोपेतां मैन्दो भीतिसमाकुल:।। 14
In the middle of the River Gangā, the boat got damaged and water filled it. Seeing the water-filled boat and worried with fear, (14)
वस्त्रेणाच्छाद्य वदनं भक्तियुक्तो हनूमत:
मंत्रमेनं जपंस्तस्थौ शुद्धात्मानन्यमानस:।। 15
Covering his face with a cloth, with a pure heart, keeping his mind away from all other things, with total devotion to Hanumān, went on reciting Hanumān maha mantra. (15)
तत्काले हनुमान् शीघ्रं भक्तवात्सल्यबुद्धित:
नावं धृत्वा शिरस्येतां महावानररूपधृत्।। 16
Hanuman the Protector
At that instance, Hanumān the protector of devotees took the form of a huge monkey and carried the boat on His head, (16)
गड्गातीरं निनायाशु पश्यतां तीरवासिनां
कपिवेषधरो देवस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत।। 17
And took it to the other side of the Gangā and Hanumān in the monkey form divinely disappeared as all those present on the bank were seeing. (17)
महाप्लवड्गमानीतां नावं दृष्ट्वा मुनीश्वर!।
आश्चर्यं परमं प्रापु: तत्रत्या: तीरवासिन:।। 18
Oh! Mytrēya! Those on the bank were greatly bewildered seeing the boat brought by the huge monkey. (18)
मैंदो वरुह्म तां नावं तीरस्थानखिलान् जनान्
दृष्ट्वाश्चर्यगतान् भक्त: प्रोवाच श्रीहनूमत:।। 19
Seeing the people surprised, Mainda that disembarked from that boat said so with. (19)
जना: किमर्थमाश्चर्यं महत्तरमकारणम्
युष्माभिर्गतमेतस्मै शक्ता यूयं विवक्षितुम् 20
‘Oh! Dear people! Tell me why all of you are so surprised’. (20)
केनचित्कपिना नीता तीरं नौ शिरसा द्विज!
तस्मात्प्राप्तं तदस्माभिरपूर्वं महदद्भुतम्।। 21
The people said, ‘Oh! Brāhmin! We are all surprised because a huge monkey brought in the boat, a site that we saw never before’. (21)
यतो दृष्टो महावीर: युष्माभिर्हनुमान् जनै:
ततो यूयं भाग्यवन्त: कृतार्था: पुण्यशालिन:।। 22
Mainda said, ‘Oh! People! You are really lucky, auspicious and pious because you actually saw the great valoured Hanumān’. (22)
मया कृतं हनूमत: श्रीरामांघे्र: प्रपूजनम्
स्वप्नेप्यदृष्टो हनुमान् पापो हं मन्दभाग्यवान्।। 23
Worship of Lord Hanumān and worship to the lotus feet of Lord Rāma were carried out by me. But I could not see Hanumān even in dreams. I am sinful and unlucky. (23)
नास्ति चेत्स्वामिनस्सर्वकामदं दर्शनं मम
करोम्यद्यैव गड्गाया: प्रवेशं लोकगर्हितम्।। 24
If I could not get the all wish-fulfilling divine vision, I will jump into the River Gangā in a manner that people despise’. (24)
तदा श्रीहनुमान् धीरो भक्तवात्सल्यबुद्धिना
पीताम्बरधरश्श्रीमान् स्मितवक्त्रश्चतुर्भुज:
मैंदस्य पुरतश्शीघ्र्ं प्रादुरासीत्कृपाम्बुधि:।। 25
Divine Vision of Hanumān
Then, out of affection for his devotee, the self-controlled hero, wearer of pure silk cloths, owner of all the riches, one with a smiling countenance and four hands, ocean of mercifulness – Hanumān divinely appeared before Mainda. (25)
समागतं हनूमन्तं दृष्ट्वा मैंदो महातपा:
साष्टांगं प्रणिपत्याथ पूजां कर्तुं मनो दधे।। 26
The great penance performer Mainda saw Hanumān, fell prostrate at His lotus feet and started worshipping. (26)
उष्ट्रारूढ़! सुवर्चलासहचरस्सुग्रीवमित्रांजना
सूनो वायुकुमार! केसरितनूजाक्षादिदैत्यांतक
सीताशोकहराग्निनन्दन! सुमित्रासम्भवप्राणद!
श्रीभीमाग्रज शम्भुपुत्र! हनुमन्पव्म्चास्य तुभ्यं नम:।। 27
‘Oh! One with camel as the vehicle! One with Suvarcchala as the consort! Friend of Sugrīva! Son of Mother Ańjanādēvi! Son of Wind God! Son of Kēśari, the monkey king! Destroyer of Akşa and other demons! Remover of Mother Sītā’s misery! Son of Fire God Agni! Gifter of life to Lakşmaņa! Brother of Bhīma! Son of Lord Śiva! Hanumān! One with Five Faces! Salutations to you’. (27)
अघ्र्याचमनपाद्यैश्च गन्धधूपप्रदीपकै:
नानाविधफलै: पुष्पै: पूजयामास वायुजम्।। 28
So saying Mainda worshipped Hanumān, the son of Wind God with Arghya (water for drinking), pādya (water for washing feet), ācamana (water for thrice-sipping), fragrant sandal paste (gandha), fragrant herbal smoke (dhūpa), light (deepa), different types of fruits and flowers. (28)
पूजां मैंदकृतां स्वामी तुष्ट: स्वीकृत्य मारुति:
मैंदाय च वरान्दत्वा तमुवाच कपीश्वर:।। 29
Happily receiving the worship performed by Mainda, satisfied Hanumān gave boons to him and said to him, (29)
भक्तसंरक्षणार्थाय त्वत्समीपे वसाम्यहम्
इह भुक्त्वाखिलान् भोगान् अन्ते प्राप्यसि मत्पदम्
इत्युक्त्वा हनुमान्विप्रं तत्रैवान्तरधीयत।। 30
‘Oh! Mainda! I am with you to protect my devotee. You will enjoy all the wishes in this world and, ultimately, will reach me’. So telling to the Brāhmin, Hanumān disappeared divinely. (30)
इति श्रीपराशरसंहितायां श्रीपराशरमैत्रेयसंवादे मैंदचरित्रकथनं नाम पव्म्चत्रिंशत्पटल:
Thus ends the 35th Chapter (Pańcatrinśatpaţalah) “The Story of the History of Mainda” (Maindacaritrakathanam) of Śrī Parāśara Samhitā
