The Promise to the Gods

(Dēvāśvāsanamm)

श्रीमैत्रये :
श्लोक:
पराशर नमस्तुभ्यं जगदानन्दहेतवे
सेतवे सर्वधर्माणां सिंघवे करुणांबुनाम्।। 1

Sri Mytrēya:

Oh! Sage Parāśara! I bow to you, the cause of happiness in the world, a bridge to reach all virtues and an ocean of kindness. (1)

पौरन्दरीं पुरिं प्राप्य नारदो मुनिसत्तम:
अकृतानन्तरं किं वा बू्रहि मह्मं दयानिधे।। 2

Oh! Merciful one! Please tell me what the great sage Nārada did on reaching the city of Indra”. (2)

श्रीपराशर:
रक्ष: पीडितदेवानां रक्षणाय महामुनि:
जवादुपगतो रम्यां सुधर्मां धर्मवत्सल:।। 3

Seer Parāśara:

Intent on the secutiry of those troubled by the demons, sage Nārada reached Sudharma, the court of the gods. (3)

कस्त्राता नो द्य भीतानां उद्धरेदापदम्बुवे:
अधिकुर्यात्परिष्वस्मान् न्यधास्व: क: पुमानिह।। 4

Who will now protect us, the frightened? Who can lift us from the sea of dangers? Who is going to protect us? (4)

पुरा संश्रुत्य भगवन् रक्षामिति दिवौकस:
अस्मद्दौर्भाग्यसम्पत्त्या सविस्मार: श्रियापति: 5

Lord Vişņu, to our misfortune, forgot us now despite the earlier promise of protecting us. (5)

अन्यथा कथमस्माकं दुरन्तास्युर्विपत्तय:
इति संचित्यमानानां देवानां दु:खचेतसाम्।। 6

How can our difficulties go away?’ As the godly personalities were so engrossed, (6)

कथा कथयतां धीमान् शनैरिव दिवौकसाम्
त्रिशूलरोम्ण: वीर्याणि लोकदु:ख कराणि च
स्मारं स्मारं अथान्योन्यं झडिति त्रस्यतां सताम्
पश्यतिस्म सदा शक्रं प्रहसन्निव नारद:।। 7

Those narrating the stories of gods, those remembering the grief-causing acts of the demon Triśūlarōma, those feeling shy and Indra along with them; so he (Nārada) dound on arrival. (7)

इन्द्रो पि सहसोत्थाय नारदागमविस्मित:
चकार विधिवन्पूजां आसनार्पणपूर्वकम्।। 8

Indra got up promptly, surprised at the arrival of Nārada, seated him and honoured him as stipulated. (8)

इन्द्र: कृतांजलिर्भूत्वा श्वेतवर्णमुखाम्बुज:
समग्रीवस्स्थलद्वाचा नारदस्याग्रतो मुने।। 9

Indra stood with reverentially folded hands, with an whitened face like a white lotus and mouth with incoherent utterings, in front of Nārada, (9)

तस्थौ वाष्पै:प्रयुक्तास्सन् दैत्यं पुत्रपराभवात्।। 10

Stood with tears in his eyes due to defeat at the hands of that demon offspring. (10)

अजानन्निव योगींद्रों वैकृतं तु शचीपते:
प्रभुतां त्रिदिवेशानामिदमाह बृहस्पतिम्।। 11

But, as though unaware of the difficult situation of the godly personalities, the great Yōgi Nārada inquired about the rule of the gods from their Guru Bŗihaspati. (11)

वृहस्पते! सुराचार्य! कथमास्ते सुरेश्वर:
पराजित इवाभाति केन वापकृतं स्वयम्।। 12

Oh! Guru of the gods! Bŗihaspati! How is Dēvēndra? He looks as though defeated by someone. He seems to have come to harm at the hands of someone. (12)

किन्निमित्तमिदं सर्वं पृच्छतो ब्रूहि मे यथा।
इति वादिनि देवर्षौ बभाषे गीष्पतिर्वच:।। 13

Tell me how he became like this’. So asked by Narada, Brihaspati started telling so. (13)

त्वया प्रत्यग्दृशा ब्रह्मन् त्रिविधं तु शुभाशुभम्
साक्षात्संदृश्यते नूनं जगतां हितकाम्यया। 14

Oh! Holy Sage (brahmaŗşi)! Seeker of the Wellfare of the world! You, the well-wisher of the world, can actually see with you divine vision (divyadŗşţi) the all the auspicious and inauspicious happenings in the past, present and future. (14)

अद्यापि विकृतं घोरं ज्ञातमेव त्वया मुने
तथापि सूच्यते किंचित् ज्ञानतो मुनिसत्तम!।। 15

Oh! Great sage! You are aware of the present day cruel and ghastly situation. Even so, best among the sages! I will enlighten you on it with whatever little knowledge I have. (15)

अस्ति त्रिशूलरोमाख्य: राक्षसो दृढविक्रम:
शम्भोर्लब्धवरो भूत्वा दुर्धर्षो देवदानवै:।। 16

There is a demon of great valour named Triśūlarōma. Having received the boon of Lord Śiva, he could not be defeated by neither gods nor demons. (16)

स बाधते खिलान् लोकान् इन्द्रमेनं विशेषत:
अतस्त्रिविष्टपाधीश: लज्जयावनतानन:
त्वया संभाषितुं नालं स्तोतुं च भवतो गुणान्।। 17

He is troubling the entire world, especially this Indra here. That is why Dēvēndra, with his head hanging in shame, is not able to talk and praise your virtues. (17)

इतरे वरुणाद्यस्तु कांदिशीका यथायथं
न गृह्णन्ति हविर्देवा असिपुत्राभयान्मुने! 18

Varuņa and other gods, running hither and tither out fear of this son of the demon Asi and are not accepting the offerings made in fire sacrifices. (18)

नित्यकर्माणि नष्टानि तथा नैमित्तिकान्यपि
श्रौतस्मार्तान्यपि तथा दूषितानि दुरात्मना।। 19

Regular (nitya) and specific (naimitta) activities (karmas) are lost. Even the Vēda based activities were stopped by that evil one. (19)

तन्महोपद्रव प्राप्या केन शाम्येन बुध्यते
भवदागतिमेवात्र कांक्षते विबुधा अमी।। 20

How can one be equipoised when such a trouble exists? All the godly personalities are waiting and seeking for your arrival. (20)

करुणाद्र्रमनस्कानां परार्थं हि सतां गति:
भवदागमनादेव लबधसंज्ञा पुरस्सरा:
प्राणंति ग्रीष्मसंतप्तौ शीतवातांबुभिर्यथा।। 21

The aim of merciful true persons is welfare of others, right! All these personalities are waiting for you and standing to be cooled from the heat, like that of summer, by the cool breeze and watery mist (of your arrival). (21)

भवदागमविस्त्र्ंभ वशत: पुनरागता:
एषां स्थैर्यायसंयोगि: भगवनुपदिश्यताम्।। 22

These people gathered only due to the arrival of your kind self. Oh! Great soul! Instruct them to restore their poise. (22)

भवादृशा हि सर्वत्र स्पष्ट एव मनीषिण:
निवर्तयन्ति दु:खानि योजयन्ति सुखान्यपि।। 23

It is clear that, everwhere, only the wise ones like you can drive away the grief and restore happiness; right! (23)

त्रिशूलरोम दुष्टात्मा केनोपायेन वध्यते
तमाचक्ष्व मुनिश्रेष्ठं दुर्लभं जीवनं तत:।। 24

Oh! Best amongst the seers! Please tell by what method this Triśūlarōma can be killed. Otherwise, life is becoming very unbearable. (24)

आहूय प्रतिजानीहि सर्वान्देवान्भयान्वितान्
आपन्नरक्षणायैव संभृतो वलयन्त्विति।। 25

Calling the frightened and anxious gods to you, please assure them of protection from the dangers’ (faced by them). (25)

इत्याकण्र्य गुरोर्वाक्यं नारदो मुनिसत्तम:
नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यां नालं द्रष्टुं शचीपतिम्।। 26

Having herd the narration by sage Bŗihaspati, Nārada, with his eyes full of tears, could not see Indra clearly. (26)

ततस्तु धैर्यमास्थाय नारदो विजितेंद्रिय:
वाष्पं जलावसे केन मार्जयामास पाणिना।। 27

Gathering courage, Nārada, the winner over his senses, wiped away his tears. (27)

ततो नारायणं देवं ध्यात्वा हरिपरायण:
देवानभयदानेन जीवयामास नारद:।। 28

Then the eternal singer of peans of Hari (Vişņu) meditated upon Nārāyaņa (Vişņu) and made the gods satisfied by giving the promise of protection (abhaya). (28)

पुरा बृहस्पते! साक्षात् लक्ष्मीशशरणं गता:
तत्र तेन प्रतिज्ञातं हनिष्ये सर्वराक्षसाम्।। 29

Oh! Bŗihaspati! Once all the gods sought asylum with Śrī Mahāvişņu himself directly. He took a vow to destroy all the demons. (29)

आंजनेयावतारेण संभवामि भुवस्थले
तदा भवंतस्सुखिन: सर्वतो गिरुपद्रवा:।। 30

I will be taking an incarnation as Ańjanēya on the Earth. Then you will be safe without any fears’. (30)

इत्यादिश्य हरिश्श्रीमान् देवो नारायणस्तथा
आव्म्जनेयावतारेण जात: संरक्षितुं जगत् 31

Nārāyana, spouse of Lakşmį and God of gods (dēvedēva), following His order, took birth as Ańjanēya (Hanumān) for the protection of the world. (31)

स इदानीं कपिश्रेष्ठ: पम्पाया: कानने शुभे
बालक्रीडाप्रदेशे तु निगृह्णाति दुरात्मणाम्।। 32

That great monkey worrior will kill that bad-souled one now just like the bālakrįda (Child-Play) place in the auspicious forest located near Lake Pampā. (32)

इममेव दुरात्मानं असिपुत्रं दुरासदं
संहारयितुकामेन हनूमन्तं गतोस्म्यहम्।। 33

I tried to approach Hanumān with the intent of making him kill this bad-souled one, sun of demon Asi and a tough nut to crack. (33)

रक्षोवधं समुद्दिश्य बहुधा प्रार्थिता मया
मामब्रवीत् कपिश्रेष्ठो भक्तपालनतत्पर:।। 34

I prayed him a lot for killing the demon. The great monkey worrior that always protects the devotees, said so. (34)

किमर्थं प्राथ्र्यते ब्रह्मन् असिपुत्रवधस्त्वया
ममावतारस्सर्वो पि दुष्टानां निग्रहाय हि।। 35

Oh! Holy sage! Why are you specifically asking for the killing of the demon Triśūlarōma son of Asi? Is not my incarnation for killing all evil ones? (35)

शिष्टानां रक्षणार्थाय विद्धि त्वमपि नारद!
विशेषेणावतारो यं हनुमान्लोकविश्रुत:।। 36

Oh! Nārada! You know that my this incarnation, known in the world as Hanumān, is specifically for protection of good-doers. (36)

हन्तुं त्रिशूलरोमांण सर्वलोकभयावहम्
देवतानां हितार्थाय मद्भक्तानां विशेषत:।। 37

My this incarnation is for killing that world-frightening Triśūlarōma, to give security to the gods and especially protect my devotees. (37)

अव्म्जनाया: फलं दातुं तपसां गर्भसम्भवात्
इत्येवमवतारस्य मुख्यमेतत्प्रयोजनम्।। 38

Being born to Mother Ańjana as a result of here penance, the main purpose of my this incarnation is that only. (38)

तदत्र प्रार्थना ब्रह्मन् पिष्टपेषणसन्निभा
अचिरादेव तं हन्ये न भेत्तव्यं कदाचन्।। 39

Hence, Oh! Holy Seer! Requesting me again for it is is like grinding the fine flour further (purposeless). I will kill that demon very soon. Have no fear. (39)

त्वमप्युज्जीवय ब्रह्मन् हितवाक्यसुधारसै:
दुष्टदानव दावाग्नि संतप्तां त्रिदिवौकस:।। 40

Oh! Holy Seer! You also assure the heaven dwellers, with your helpful words so as to ameliorate the forest fire like heat of that evil-doer demon”. (40)

इत्यादिष्टो हमेवाद्य आव्म्जनेयेन धीमता
आगतो स्मि महाभाग! दिवि देवसभां प्रति।। 41

So commanded by intelligent Hanumān, Oh! Great soul! I came to the court of gods in the heaven. (41)

अतो वै त्यज्यतां त्रासो रक्षसो वरगर्वितात्
आव्म्जनेये सति प्राज्ञे क्व भयं क्व पराभव:।। 42

So, forget the fear from that demon prideful of the boon he received. Why fear when Ańjanēya is there? Where is the defeat? (42)

इदानीमेव दुर्बद्धेरसिपुत्रस्य रक्षस:
श्रुणुघ्वं वीरमत्यर्थं यूयं सगुरवस्सुरा:।। 43

Hence, along with your Guru, listen how much is the valour of that evil-minded son of Asi’. (43)

इत्युक्तं नारदश्श्रीमान् तेषां प्रत्ययकारणात्
जहार संशयं तेषां हस्तविन्यस्तमस्तके।। 44

Such an earnest explanation (by Nārada) of the fact, with hand on their heads, made them leave in any doubt. (44)

इति वादिनि योगीन्दे्र प्रीतो भूत्पाकशासन:
उद्ग्रीवफुल्लवदन: त्यक्तगद्गदविस्वर:।। 45

Thus told by Yōgi Nārada, Dēvēndra felt happy, rose his head with a bloom like face and lost the heaviness in his throat. (45)

तुष्टाव परमस्तोत्रे नारदं मुनि सत्तमम्
नारदस्यतु तद्वाक्यं श्रुत्वा देवाश्च सूनृतम्
जहर्षुर्विस्मिताश्चैव तुष्टुवुश्च मुनीश्वरम्।। 46

Then he made Nārada happy earnest praising hymns. Gods too were surprised and happy at the good words of Nārada and praised that great sage. (46)

आश्वास्यचैव तु सुरान्विधिनन्दनो पि
विज्ञाप्य वायुतनयस्य महाप्रसादम्
अपृच्छ दैवतगुरुं प्रथमानुशिष्टं
लोकेशविष्टपमगाद्भुवनावनोत्क:।। 47

Thus assuring the fate-cheated gods, explaining the benevolence of Lord Hanumān, having exchanged plesantaries with the Guru of the gods – Bŗihaspati, the well-wisher of the world Nārada levt for the heaven (Vaikunttha). (47)

इति श्रीपराशरसंहितायां श्रीपव्म्चमुखहनुन्मन्त्रविवरणे देवाश्वासनं नाम एकोनत्रिंशतितम: पटल:

Thus ends the 29th Chapter, entitled The Promise to the Gods” (Dēvāśvāsanamm)
