“The Story of the History of Kaśyapa”
(Kaśyapacaritra kathanamm)
श्रीमैत्रेय :
महादेवांशसंभूतं वायुना प्रेरितं बलात्
अंजनागर्भसंभूतं हनुमंतमुपास्महे।। 1
Mytrēya:
“I am worshipping Hanumān the one born as an essence of Śiva and born to Ańjana, thanks to the benevolence of Wind God Vāyu. (1)
हनुमन्मंत्रमाहात्म्यं श्रुतं विस्तरतो मया
तद्भक्तानां प्रभावं च श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं प्रभो।। 2
Oh! Great sage Parāśara! I heard (from you) the gratness of Hanumān mantras. Now I am enthusiastic to learn the greatness of the devotees of Hanumān. (2)
श्रीपराशर:
ब्रह्मवर्त इति ग्राम: सर्वसंपत्समृद्धिमान्
ब्राह्मण: कश्यपो नाम स्थितस्तत्र गृहाश्रमी।। 3
Parāśara:
There is a village named Brahmāarta that is blessed with all types of riches. There lived a family man named Kaśyapa. (3)
सदाचाररतश्शांतो वेदवेदांगपारग:
हनूमंतं भजन्नित्यं अघ्र्यपाद्यासनादिभि:।। 4
He is fond of virtuous way of life. He is a calm and balanced person, well-versed with Vĕdas and their parts (Vĕdavĕdāńgas). He worshipped Hanumān daily by offering water for drinking (arghyam), water for washing feet (pādyam), seat (āsanam) and others. (4)
पुष्पै:पत्रैर्धूपदीपै: बलिभिर्वंदनै:स्तवै:
नामसंकीर्तनैध्र्यानै: सदाराधनतत्परै:।। 5
He remained worshipping Hanumān with flowers (puşpam), leaves (patram), incense (dhūpam), lamp (deepam); by singing His name (nāmasankīrtanam) and by meditation (dhyānam). (5)
एवं निवसतस्तस्य विप्रस्य द्विजपुंगव
हनूमानेव धर्मिष्ठधनाढ्यनं ह्रदि स्थित:।। 6
Oh! The best among Brahmins! Mytrĕya! For a person so living, Hanuman that remains whereever there is virtue (dharma), by remaining the hearts of rich persons, (6)
प्रेरयन् सर्ववस्तूनि तैर्दापयति नित्यश:
धनेन बहुनातेन समृद्धो भूद्विजोत्तम:।। 7
Encouraged them to provide to Kaśyapa money on daily basis, with which he (Kaśyapa) became contented monetarily. (7)
तस्य हर्तुं धनं चौर: कश्चिन्निश्चितपापभृत्।
अवकाशं प्रतीक्षन्वै करोत्येव गतागतम्।। 8
An evil thief was reconnoitering him, with the intent of stealing his money. (8)
यदा यदा तद्गृहमाप चौर:
तदा तदा भिन्नविचित्रवेष:
विभीषयत्येव निगूढरूप:
कपिप्रवीर: परवीरहंता।। 9
As and when the thief was coming in (to Kaśyapa ‘s house), the enemy-destroyer monkey warrior Hanumān used to frighten him in different unknown garbs. (9)
दंडी कदाचिन्मुसलीकदाचित्
खड्गी कदाचित्कवची कदाचित्
शिखी कदाचिद्विशिखी कदाचित्
विप्र:कदाचित्सुभट: कदाचित्।। 10
Once holding a stick, once holding a pounding rod, once holding a sword, once wearing a coat of guard (kavacham), once holding an arrow, once holding a spade, once as a Brahmin, once as a servant, (10)
एवं सदारक्षणतत्पर: प्रभु:
विलोचनं पक्ष्म यथाकपीेंद्र:
स्वभक्तवात्सल्यमथप्रकाशयन्
गृहेतुकामो नहि दर्शनंगत:।। 11
In such a manner, like eyelids guarding the eyes, Hanumān used to protect his devotee unseen, out of sheer affection. (11)
अवकाशंततोलब्ध्वा संतोषेण मलिम्लुच:
चिराय चिंतयामास प्राप्तमेवमहाधनम्।। 12
The thief once had an opportunity and felt happythat he can obtain that great wealth. (12)
अद्यास्यविप्रस्य गृहंप्रविष्ट:
प्राज्यधनं प्राप्य नयामि गेहं
भार्यां च यूवति: तनयान्कुमारिकान्
संतोषयिष्यामि सहात्मबंधुभि:।। 13
‘I will enter this Brahmin’s house today, grab all the wealth, go home and live happily with wife and children’. (13)
इतिबघ्वा परिकरं चतुर्भिस्सहबंधुभि:
आजगामास्यविप्रस्य गेहं पाटच्चर:खल:।। 14
So deciding, that evil man came to Kaśyapa’s house along with four of his relatives. (14)
निशिसर्वेषु सुप्तेषु धनंहर्तुमथैकदा
कुड्यंभित्त्वाखनित्रेण प्रवेष्टुमुपचक्रमे।। 15
At night, while everyone was sleeping, he attempted to dig a hole in the wall with a crowbar and enter. (15)
हनुमानपिसर्वात्मा भक्तपालनदीक्षित:
प्रविशंतंबिलद्वारे चोरं जग्राहपाणिना।। 16
Ever intent on protecting His devotees, omnipresent Hanumān held the thief’s hand tightly as the later entered through the hole in the wall. (16)
काश्यपंवेषमाश्रित्य चोरांतिकमुपागत:
दृष्ट्वा चोरानुगाश्चैनं दुद्रुवुर्भयविह्वला:।। 17
In the garb of Kaśyapa, Hanumān, came face to face with the thief. Seeing Him the fellow thieves trembled and ran away. (17)
बलादाकृष्यमाणे·पि गृहीत्वोरुयुगेमुहु:
न निर्गच्छंतिलोभेन ब्रह्मस्वीषु मलिम्लुच:।। 18
In spite of being held tightly, the thief was struggling to free himself, still hoping to steal the Brahmin’s wealth. (18)
न हिनस्तिकपिश्चैनं सर्वभूतदयापर:
निवर्तयितुकामस्सन् आचकर्षपुन:पुन:।। 19
The lover of all creatures, Hanumān Was not harming him, but just pulling him again and again, just to divert his attention from doing bad deeds. (19)
चोरस्तुधनलोभेन बलदर्पेणभूयसा
मामाक्रष्टुमयंविप्रो नालमित्येवमन्यते।। 20
The thief, with high hopes of stealing the money and prideful of his own strength, thought that the Brahmin would never be able to restrain him. (20)
कपिस्त्वाकृष्यचोरं वै ताडयामासमुष्टिभि:
इदमेवैनसस्तस्य प्रायश्चित्तमितीरयन् ।। 21
Hanumān pulled the thief close and started punching him as a punishment for his evil deed. (21)
अहतो·पिनचक्रंद भिदुरैरिवमुष्टिभि:
तथाहनूमान्सर्वज्ञ: कश्यपस्यस्वरूपधृत्।। 22
The thief did not cry even when beaten with diamond strong fists. Thus, all-knowing Hanumān, in the garb of Kaśyapa, (22)
क:न्को त्र इति शब्देन उच्चैश्चोरमथागिरत्
नजानंति यथागेहे सर्वे पि गृहवर्तिन:।। 23
With no one out side the house able to understand, shouting loudly, ‘who is that, who is that’ the thief was thrown out by Hanumān. (23)
तथा गृहीत्वा तं चोरं बहिरानीय वेगत:
मुष्टिजानुपदाघातै: अकुट्टयदरिंदम:।। 24
Holding the thief so, brought the thief out side the house quickly and beat him with fists, kneess and feet. (24)
अक्षम: क्रंदितुं भूयो धैर्येण त्रपया पुन:
असोढवेदनश्चौर: उच्चैश्चक्रंद दीनवत्।। 25
Not in a position to remonstrate back and because of pride and shame, (the thief) ultimately cried loudly, unable to bear the pain. (25)
तस्याक्रंदनशब्देन संबुद्धा:प्रातिवेशिका:
विलोक्यानुनयंतस्ते तथा तं गृहमेधिनम्।। 26
Due to that loud crying, all the servants woke up and tried to quiten things between the thief and the Brāhmin (actually Hanumān). (26)
राजभृत्या वधं कुर्युज्र्ञायेयुर्यदि यामिका:
इति चोरं विनिर्भत्स्र्य पुनरेवं न कुर्विति।। 27
They berated the thief, saying that ‘if the town watchman comes to know, he may be killed by the King’s soldiers’. Warning him, ‘Never do such things in future’, (27)
कृपया मोक्षयित्वा तं सर्वे जग्मुर्यथागतम्।। 28
They went to their homes after he was some how got freed. (28)
तत: प्रातस्समुत्थाय कश्यपो ब्राह्मणोत्तम:
भित्तिरंन्घ्रं समालोक्य विस्मयं परमं गत:।। 29
Next morning, the good Brāhmin Kasyapa woke up and was surprised to see that there is a big hole in the wall of his house. (29)
बहिरागत्य तद्वीथ्यां चोराश्चोरा इतिबु्रवन्
क्रंदयामास वच्छ्रुत्वा तमूचु: प्रातिवेशिका:।। 30
He came out on to the street shouting, ‘thief, thief’. Seeing that the servants told him so. (30)
अकांडे क्रियते ब्रह्मन् किमिदं क्रंदनं वृथा
अस्माभिर्मोचितश्चोरो निष्पिष्टो भवता निशि।। 31
Oh! Brāhmin! How come you are shouting at this time? ‘Last night the thief was beaten black and blue by you and the poor fellow was freed by us. (31)
यामिका यदि श्रृण्वंति ह्मनर्थस्तु महान्भवेत्
इत्युक्त: कश्यपो विप्र: तूष्णीं चिंतापरो भवत्।। 32
If the city watchman hears you now there could be a big trouble’. So told Brāhmin Kasyapa kept quiet and started thinking. (32)
हनुमत्कृत्यमेतद्धि नान्यथा भवतीदृशम्
चौर एव महाधन्यो हनुमन्मूर्तिदर्शनात्।। 33
‘Definitely, this was the work of Lord Hanumān. It can not be any thing else. Actually the thief is blessed to have seen Lord Hanumān. (33)
पाणिपादतलस्पर्श: प्राप्तो नास्ति तु तस्य मे! 34
He (thief) could have the divine touch of the hand, knees and feet of the Lord. I could not get such an experience. (34)
सदा तदाराधनतत्परो·पि
न प्राप्तमेवाहममुष्यदर्शनं
चिरंमहापाप परायणस्य
चौरस्य देव: कथमाविरासीत्। 35
Even though, I was always worshipping him, I could not have the divine vision (darśan) of the Lord. How could the evil thief could have Lord Hanumān‘s divine vision? (35)
मलिम्लुचो यो मनुजाधम: कथं
मुनींद्रवृन्दैरपि माननीय:
यमांजनेयो निजपादपंकजै:
समर्थयामास करांबुजैरपि।। 36
How that worst specimen of men, the thief that was beaten by the Lord with hands and feet; this (experience) can be better than the whole lot of the best sages? (36)
अहं तु निर्भाग्यतरो वृथोद्यम:
खलश्च नीचो तिनृशंसचेष्टित:
कथं तमद्राक्षमहं कपीश्वरं
तपोबलेनातिनिकृष्टकर्मणा।। 37
I am unfortunate, and worst of the human species, performing fruitless rituals and very ordinary acts. How can I have the divine vision of Lord Hanumān with ordinary power of my ordinary rituals? (37)
चौरो पि तेनैव समीक्षितो महान्
साक्षात्कृतो नैव मयाघमूर्तिना
श्रुतो मया चोरकपीश्वरोद्यमो
मदीयदौर्भाग्यविभूतिरीदृशी! 38
Even the thief is blessed, having been seen by Lord Hanumān. Divine vision eluded me, the sinful one. I could just hear the episode between the thief and Lord Hanumān. Is this my unfortunate state of affairs? (38)
अथवा मय्यनुक्रोशो विद्यते मारुतेर्ध्रुवम्
कथं रक्षितुमारब्ध: चौरं मत्पीडनोद्यमम्।। 39
Otherwise how Lord Hanumān, who came to protect me could bestow benevolence on the thief that was intent on harming me? (39)
योगीश्वराणामपि यत्नदुर्लभं
यद्दर्शनं किंच सुरासुराणां
पापीयसा दृष्टिपथंगतो य:
तं वानरेंद्रं शरणं भजामि।। 40
I seek refuge in that Lord Hanumān, whose divine vision is not bestowed to even yoga practisioners, gods or demons in spite of trying hard, but who sees benevolently the thief that is on an evil path. (40)
लक्षयोजनविस्तीर्णं द्विलक्षोत्रतभास्करं
नमो स्तु वायुपुत्राय ग्रसते बाललीलया।। 41
Salutions to the son of Wind God, who, as a child’s play, swallowed Sun that is 400,000 km in extent and has more than 200,000 powerfiul light beams. (41
उदयास्ताचलद्वंद्वे पादमूलं प्रसार्य च
अध्येतुं भास्कराद्वेदान् अखिलान्गृह्णतेनम:।। 42
Salutions to Lord Hanumān, who by standing with one foot each on the Eastern (udaya = rising) and Western (asta = setting) mounts (always facing the Sun), learnt all of Vĕdas from the Sun God. (42)
सर्ववेदांतवेद्याय पूर्णाय परमात्मने
सच्चिदानंदरूपाय भविष्यद्ब्रह्मणे नम:।। 43
Salutions to Lord Hanumān, the future Creator (Bhavişyadbrahma), who is well-versed in all Vedas and Veda parts (Vēdāńgas), form of total personality, form of truth, form of learning and form of bliss’. (43)
इत्यसौ कश्यपो विप्र: स्मरन्हनुमत: कृपाम्!
बुभुजे सकलान्भोगान् पुत्रमित्रकलत्रवान्।। 44
The Brāhmin Kasyapa ardently worshipping Lord Hanumān too enjoyed all good things of life along with his wife, children and friends. (44)
भुक्त्वा तु सकलान्भोगान् इंद्राद्यैरपि दुर्लभान्।
अंते जगाम कैवल्यं हनुमत्कृपया द्विज:।। 45
Enioying all good things of life that even Indra can not get, by the grace of Lord Hanumān, that Brāhmin ulyimately obtained spiritual liberation. (45)
मैत्रेय! वायुतनयस्य हरे: प्रभावं
भक्त्या श्रूणोति कथयत्यमलं जनेभ्य:
यस्सर्वकामनिवहं परिभुज्य लोके
संसारतापविरतिं स पुमान्लभेत।। 46
‘Oh! Great sage Mytrēya! Whoever hears or recites the sin-removing nature of Lord Hanumān, will enjoy all the fruits of life in this world and will ultimately be liberated from this mundane world. (46)
